Gold Flake Angel

Would you chance a Gold Flake Angel in a 90 gallon reef tank with LPS and softies? Also, would there be an issue with a Potters Angel?

Thanks,
Ken

I would, I have one and it is my favorite angelfish. They are just gorgeous. He might start to like the taste of brains but other than that he should be fine. I think he would be fine with a potters angel. Neither one of them are really that mean.

i have a 1" goldflake in my 180 reef. SPS, LPS, softies, clam. The only thing he tends to nip are my button polyps. I dont mind since they are big and brown (ie: UGLY :)) but he doesn't do any real damage. they still extend and reproduce like crazy.

Its weird the he would hit your Zoas, since they are toxic and all. I had one that started destroying croceas, star polyps and open brains. They really aren't as reef safe as some say, but some do stay away from corals completely.

he only nips the long tentacles they have (not the flat small zoos) these polyps are huge (like half dollar size) and have about 25 long tentacles that surround it (long as in 10mm maybe) He will bite them off and then leave... lol its rather funny to watch

I would say no... only after scuba diving and seeing how MASSIVE these fish can get... I saw them over 1foot in diameter! beautiful though.

I got this guy from a local reefer cause it was picking at his SPS. Any angel is a risk. Some are less of a risk. These are supposed to be less of a risk, but no guarentee.

That is a nice fish! How large is he/she? I thought these fish max out at 10" and that's in the wild, so in captivity it would usually be much less.

This is typical of smaller Goldflakes. Once they reach 6" and bigger they tend to become more destructive. I find that large wild caught specimans are more prone to "eat" Zoas, fleshy LPS like Brains, Favia's, Elegence, Clams, and Xenia. I have also seen them pick at and damage Acropora colonies. Smaller specimans can be weaned onto prepared foods to the point that the picking is minimal once they reach adulthood but there is still a 50/50 chance that they will be to destructive and have to be removed.

Oh well, I threw caution to the wind. I got a beautiful one yesterday. Same colors etc as the picture abopve. He is about 3" - 3 1/2".

i figured that if i raise him from a tiny juvi, i can get him to eat only prepared foods. If not, ill just have to set up a FOWLR for him :)

Good luck ken, I had one in my reef until he became something of a menace to my coral. I hope that yours will be a perfect inhabitant.

He was 3 and change. Expensive, but he is beautiful. I guess I have him for 3-4 weeks now and he has left my corals alone. He eats like a pig though. So far he was a great choice.

I have a bevy of angels in my tank. Including a goldflake.

Had a mixed reef going. Thought all was well. One day one of them decided to start munching. Then it was contagious. They ALL just MOWED through my tank. You would not believe how fast the tank went down.

Now I got a fowlr.
