Gold Heart trigger

Crazy. My bl doesn't eat a ton either.....I bet it is the qt tank. If it was in the main tank, it would be fine. BUT 95% of bls don't eat pellets I've found so I would have to feed much more meat.

Hope it works out for you.....keep us on the in!

have you tried any live food? I'd try ghost shrimp, even enriched adult brine shrimp, anything to get him started.

also, pay really close attention to water quality, daily partial water changes if necessary.

Yep, I definitely keep the water quality high in my QTs.

I do daily 15% water changes, and about 30 minutes after I feed I siphon all the uneaten food off the bottom. Ammonia/nitrate/nitrite are all 0, pH is about 8.1, salinity is 1.024.

I havent tried any live food yet, but I'm thinking I might pick some up tonight to try. Sucks, I hate feeding something live food and then having to wean it off that. But if it saves the fish, then great.

Well I'm not putting my Gold heart into the main tank for a while yet, I had an ich outbreak in there two weeks ago and I'm letting it remain fallow for another 2 months before I put fish in, so hopefully this little guy learns to eat while in QT.

Definately see if you can get some live ghost shrimp. It would be crazy to see a trigger resist those. I'm sure he'll come around...keep us in the loop

I wouldn't worry to much about weaning a trigger to frozen. Just get him de-stressed and healthy. After that, he should eat anything.

I grabbed some at lunch and went home, he was interested. I only saw him actually get ONE, and I put 25 in there since there is a pink tail also.

The pink tail was going NUTS eating them. The Gold heart was interested and slowly moved after them. The problem is those little buggers are fast when they want to be, he would chomp and just barely miss. He has a corner he likes and wont really come out of too much, so as soon as the ghost shrimp get away from the corner he doesnt pursue. But anyway, he ate one so that is good. He slowly chased about 10 more and missed every time or just didnt ever get to the point where he was close enough to bite.

So... this is the first time in about 10 years of fish keeping that I've ever fed live food besides brine shrimp. I'm feeding freshwater ghost shrimp, is there something I should feed them first to gut load them for healthier food for the trigger?

It was kind of funny actually, the shrimp were getting chased by the pink tail and jumping out of the water, sticking to the side of the aquarium and not falling back in. I had to keep knocking them back in before they dried up.

I was pretty surprised how fast the ghost shrimp are... with the gold heart not being very energetic, he is going to have a hard time eating those. I need to disable them a little or something.

At least he is now interested! Can you net the pinktail and temporarily put him in a bucket to reduce competition? Ghost shrimp can be disabled, squeeze a little, but not too hard, or offer one on a stick.

Gut load with any high quality flake you have on hand.

Good news... the day after I fed the ghost shrimp, the Gold heart picked at some of the frozen food I put in. He didnt really do much more than suck it into his mouth, chew it, and spit it out, but that is better than before. That was Friday...

By Sunday, he is now gobbling down hunks of it. The weird thing about him is he doesnt eat very big bites. My clown and humu are about the same size as him and they eat huge pieces. This Gold heart is very finicky, he just eats small pieces. If the piece is too big, even of something soft like a scallop, he just pulls it in, chews it a second then spits it out.

But hey, at least he is eating :)

Glad to hear he is eating. Like Lisa said, you can gutload ghost shrimp with any high quality flake food (or any other fish food they will take.)

It's funny seeing those ghost shrimp jump out of the tank, they used to do that all the time when I fed them to my undy. Small spectrum pellets may be something your goldheart would be interested in too.

That's great news!

I have seen that picky food size thing as well. I've noticed too that a picky fish would rather have just the first section of the small end of a piece of shrimp, rather than the big end......I guess they like the neatness of it.

I agree, it was great news. Unfortunately, it seemed to only last 2 days, now he isnt eating again... He doesnt look sick, fins are all nice and clear and so are his eyes, respiration rate looks "normal" as far as I can tell, he just isnt interested in food.

He did eat a lot the last 2 days though, so maybe he is just full.

CHECK YOUR PMs, DANORTH!

Just finally got some updated pictures of the system he is going into.

Here is a full tank shot. The tank has nothing in it at the moment but hermit crabs, snails and two cleaner shrimp. Also a pulsing hand coral and some green star polyps. Pretty much everything will be puffer or trigger food eventually ;)

And then here is an updated picture of the sump, I got some PMs asking about what it looks like currently as the old ones I posted were from 4 or 5 months ago.

Not so hot... he ate for 2 days on the weekend then hasnt eaten since... I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and buy some more ghost shrimp and see if I can get him eating again.

At least he did eat some though, I'd say he ate 5 or 6 good sized pieces of Selcon soaked seafood, so he should survive another 2 weeks or so without eating if he had to.
