Golden Angel

Until now I guess I never really paid any attention to how my angel has been eating/feeding for the past two years.... I picked up the angel off DD two years ago and it was around 2 1/2'' when I got him. He ate mysis and brine nicely and was quite fat too, he became interested in nls and as I recall stopped eating mysis and brine. He also never picked off the rocks and this just boggled me. This past month I got another small Golden off of DD and planned to pair them. I've never seen the two chase at all. The male is now 3" and the other is 1 3/4", it was obvious he was the dominant fish. And now for the questions... The small angel was reportedly eating mysis and brine at the facility and shows no interest what so ever for either. I've tried soaking in garlic and selcon. Unlike the big angel, she picks off the rocks all day. How long can she do this? Would spawning behavior from the male stress her out? He does court her to the surface and I can see he's nipped at her anal fin. Now the male will barely eat after 4pm, he's too busy bolting around the tank. I only have a few weeks left before high school picks up and my window of feeding time is between 5-10pm after sports. How can I go about feeding them? Any advice would be appreciated.

My goldens are very shy and only survive by picking off the reef. I feed all sorts of things but they are seldom out. Weeks go by without seeing them.

If yours are out and active that's great. As long as the small one is picking off the rocks I think you are okay.

And if you are worried about your feeding schedule. Look at the Eheim auto feeder. It's great for small pellets and its only about 30 bucks.

You might try some Sera stick-on spirulina tabs, if you can find them.

My potters wasn't taking prepared food, although, like your golden, he was picking at the rocks and eating algae off the back wall of the tank. He went nuts for it. I think the key was that he could peck at it instead of chasing it in the water column. Now he's a bruiser and takes prepared food aggressively.

+1. My pair are going on god knows how many years now and neither were eating prepared food before they went in. My male though loves LPS softies, which has caused a few arguments through the glass with him...

All my lps resides next to my bsjf. Anybody next to his burrow gets the big mouth threat. They both stay away from all corals. I'll have to try to find those tabs. Nonimmigrant, about how long did it take for your pair to switch to prepared foods. I'm wondering if I should try fresh clam (is that only for large angels).

I have almost the exact opposite experience with my Golden. I received a gorgeous Golden angel (1.5"-2") from Liveaquaria about 2 months ago and he has been eating mysis and brine with gusto. He comes out in the open from time to time. I think the key to it eating prepared foods so quickly and it feeling comfortable coming out from the rocks, is that it was the first and only small angel added to my system. I let it settle in with no competition for food and no aggression from other angels or larger fish. I also QT'd for 6 weeks and treated with Prazi. I recently added a Juvi Maldives Emperor to the tank and the Golden still eats like a pig and moves about the tank without intimidation.

reppo13- IME, fresh clams and mussels are attractive snacks to all angels.
