golden pearls

Hello,

I was wondering how many people are already using golden pearls as food for their filterfeeders? I'm planning on testing it myself, however, it would be nice also to get some feedback from other users.

I've used it, but I am not sure as to how much it helps as it was used in conjunction with other foods. I've heard they work fairly well, but you need to be mindful that GPs are very high density and can foul the water easily.

thanks, I'm currently feeding a lot of fauna marin and other foods, but in combination with wodka, oversized skimmer and phosphatefilter, I have no problems keeping the water clean. However, sometimes I'm one week late with changing the P-filter and you can immidiately see this with the gorgonia's, sclero's en dendro's, they will not show any polyps when there is detectable phosphate.

Greetings All !

GP (400 um) don't seem to want to stay suspended in the water column for longer than 1.5-2.0 hours ... I'm after something longer than that. Here's an article form last year reporting a similar experience ...

A list of the specific ingredients, and the specific identity of the targeted animals, would be helpful ...

... and appreciated. :D

What do you mean by "detectable phosphate"? ... ~ 0.0 ppm? ... < 0.03 ppm? ... > 0.03 ppm? ... something else? What test kit are you using?

TIA ! ... :D

Charles Matthews here:

Two points: 1) Golden Pearls are accepted well by many NPS and they come in a variety of sizes, but their suspension is poor. This has been reported on in an article in Advanced Aquarist- but try it yourself. They sink quickly. (All foods for NPS should be tested for suspension- stir it up in a cup of reef water and watch...)

2) I'm REALLY interested in these phosphate observations. I have been having trouble with polyps closing- and I suspect phosphate as well. Have you noticed any negative reactions to higher doses of vodka?

I increase vodka dosage based on observation. If i notice an increase in algae I up the vodka dosage from my normal maintenance dose. This will turn the algae white by the following day. It looks like a white haze on the glass and powerheads.

As far as negative reactions from corals, ive observed none, as long as I feed generously.
I might add i have no gorgonia's, sclero's or dendro's. So whether these corals might react negatively I cant say.
