Golden puffer dead......by sponge????

My buddy had a 7 or so inch golden puffer that just died yesterday and he had sponges around all his intakes to protect the puffer. well he claims that when it was dead, he pulled bits of sponge from its rear end and that is what killed it....he claims.
He blames me because I told him to put sponges around all the intakes and he said his puffer ate the sponges.


does this sound realistic?

I suppose that the undigestible sponge could cause a bowel obstruction...or not?
I would sue him for slander either way.

Puffers are pigs. They wil eat& eat & eat & eat until they get obstructed. It is possible he ate the sponges and got obstructed...

I don't really know anything about puffers, but I'd like to comment on your buddy. From what you described, he's pretty bitter about it and blames you? Probably not a good friend at all. Especially when you tried to help him.
