golden puffer

I recently added a 12+ inch all golden puffer to my main tank 210,

yesterday i noticed a few spots of ich... I'm worried because of how expensive the fish is.

i've currently housing
queen angel
emperor angel
crosshatch trigger
purple tang
naso tang
stars and stripes puffer
golden puffer

stars and stripes puffer gets spots off and on. i've had ich in the tank many times ... the tangs, trigger and angels never get it. they've had it once but i'm thinking they have built up imunity against it. do you think the ich will go away on its own like it has before?

i've only had the s&s puffer for a month and the golden for a week

you have way too many fish i your tank!
for one the two puffers are going to get territorial when they are both fully grown in that size tank,
and so will the two angels
the naso will out grow the 210, and really they even look cramped fully grown in a 300.
solution?
either take one of each type of fish and set up another 210 for them,
start building your indoor pond,
or contact a custom glass person to start working on you 500 glass (no acryllic for puffers)
and believe me i am not the fish police, i am all for squeaking by when it come to tank size, but your ick is being caused by stress and it isnt going to stop til your fish get some room
also with that many fish (sepecially two puffers and two angels) you would have to do 50 gal water changes every 7 days to keep the nitrates down enough.

other words of wisdom,
UV sterilizer
Quarantine tank
Metronitazol
Glasscages (cheap custom glass aquariums)

Good luck

I have to go w' Petstorejunkie on this one.... As with her I am FAR from the tanksize police but that one is just overstocked. That tank size is decent for any of those fish but not ALL of those fish. Think of a spring break hotel room...in both its cramped/people on sofa or anything that stands still and the resulting funk of making people LIVE there.

You have a beautiful collection, hate to see them not live up to their potential. I believe the company Petstorejunkie was referring to is http://www.glasscages.com They have (seemingly) good prices for big glass tanks and make some ones that have better dimensions (3' depth is your friend) Look at their website near the bottom of the list. Glass is a MUST since puffers are notorious for gashing up acrylic via rubbing their beak/teeth against the glass.

Hope this helps...

PS If you decide you can't in good conscience keep the golden drop me a PM

I love how people on here criticize for people having "overstocked" tanks. ONe person said do u know how big those two puffers will get?.........Let me ask you this.......how long will it take a puffer to reach full size? A: YEARS!!!!!!! Most of us upgrade when we can afford it. Personally i think a 210 is ok to house those fish at a medium size. Of course when they are all full grown it will be too small but come on, theyre not all gunna grow 6 inches in the next yr. Lg angels tangs puffers etc can live for over 10 years. I dont think they do all theyre growing in the first year in an aquarium.

The puffer is already 12 inches and the tank is overstocked.

Agreed with Moggyhill.

12" puffer is not a juvi, it's a large fish.

its not mentioned how large are the other specimen, but I bet they are not small otherwise they'd turn to puffer food.

So you got your answer xtrmxhopz , nobody is trying to critisize, people are here to help, oputting all those fish at 12" and assuming that the others are large as well, so the tank is over stocked.

About your question that you asked :
1.This Puffer will never reach its full lenth, especially not in this tank.

2.I do not think people should buy this kind of stock list if they dont have REAL plan for near future upgrade, talk like "most of us will upgrade when they can afford it" are not serious , buy the fish when you can afford the upgrade thats the answer.

3.You mentioned medium size....in my book 12" is not medium size.

A 12" puffer could also only be a real 4" long. I could barely afford to feed a 6" gunea fowl (same as a yellow). If that fish is really 12", then it can eat more seafood than I can.

All im saying is there are people who have big fidh that really do plan on upgrading in the very near future. I completely understand all about overstocking, beleive me. I have learned from mistakes and am still learning.

What i was trying to say is that a fish do take time to grow and its not like theyre going to outgrow their tanks so fast. Thats all. Right now im trying to thin out my tanks because i feel theyre too crowded.

By the way i have a 100 gallon with:
baracuda
porcupine puffer
lunare wrasse
clown trigger
emperor angel
sohal tang
clown tang
3 snowflake eels
miniatus grouper
picasso trigger
great white shark

...just kidding

Most of the fish on his list could live just fine in the 210 (naso less so) perhaps a couple of them but not ALL of them. I'm very very far from the tank police but in this instance it is too much in a large tank. If he had 2x 210's that would be better and put one puffer, one angel, one tang, etc.... That should help with aggression and bioload.

Also....don't forget to properly aquascape that tank(s)!!! Each fish needs to have a "house" of rock, decor, or even home depot terra cotta pots if needs be. That goes along way towards healthy happy fish.

XtrmCHoPZ do you honestly believe that all of these fish mentioned are under say... 5 inches witht he exception of the golden?
so, emperior911, lets have it, we want the sizes of all of these fish. this will aide determining if you are over stocked at this present time.
and yes, XtrmCHoPZ we understand that all of these can be housed in this size tank if they are all juveniles. for instance i have a dogface, stars and stripes emperor angel adn a cowfish in a 55 gallon tank, one puffer is 5 inches, the other is 2, the emperor is 3.5 and the cowfish is about 5 from tip to tip. BUT i already have a larger tank for them set up and eventually all of my fish are going into a 3000gallon pond in the basement. but you must agree that if all of these fish are large in size NOW that they need to be up graded or segregated in to equally large tanks of 200 gals or more.

BTW, longhorn cowfish do 90+% of their growing during the first two years of their life. The remaining years growth is negligible. So from fry to fingernail to 18+ inches in two years.

Puffers and Angel growth is more linear but they still get into the expensive requirements zone quick. Remember that everytime size doubles volume gets approx 4x with most of these critters. So even though they are not "full" grown yet, they are not likely juveniles anymore.

Think about it, how responsible and downright odd would it look to put a 2-3" fish in with a football sized golden puffer. Assuming "Pac-Man" didn't eat his friends, even feeding would be a pain due to food size requirements.

Man why are all you guys haters? I actually know emp911 and from checking his tank out i can say it is healthy and has no aggression. And trust his fish arent all full size. I know certain fish do grow rather fast, I have a panther grouper that has EASILY put on 3-4 inches in the past 5 months! Just from experience large angels in the Pomacanthus, Holacanthus groups are slower growers as well as arothron puffers. Yes petjunkie i agree with you, just putting in my thoughts as well.

Enjoy your tank the way it is. If aggression, water quality or fish health starts to suffer - remove a fish or two. If it was my tank I'd consider adding a large UV sterilizer to help gaurd against future outbreaks. I wouldn't freak out too bad about a couple of ich spots, but I would keep an eye on it. These are my thoughts, yet most won't agree.

Queen angel 8-10INCHES
emperor angel 5-7inches
purple tang 5-6inches
stars and stripes 5-6inches
naso tang 8-10inches

i actually sold my crosshatch trigger that was getting too agressive which was 8 inches. I also sold the 12 inch golden puffer to XtrmCHoPZ

now im down to 5 big sized fish. and yes i am planning on upgrading when i get my own house. which could be a year or so.. i'm only 22

you should ask XtrmCHoPZ what fish he has in his 125... wanna talk about overstocked lololol

in XtrmCHoPZ 125 gallon tank with just hob filters he has

12 inch golden puffer
8 inch clown trigger
6-8 inch panda puffer
7 inch blueface angel
9 inch pather grouper
9 inch red coris wrasse
9 inch volitan lion
4-5 inch racoon butterfly
zebra moray
2 snowflake eels

am i forgeting anything?
