In Memoriam
my LFS is closing the doors and they had three Golden Rhomboidalis Wrasse for 50% off if i paid cash and they were 300$ and i have cash today with one on hold and am going to give him 200$ ..... just purchased a female hawaiian flame wrasse for 40$ and am interested in the golden wrasse... who knows about these or has experience with them

My favorite wrasse, if you can get healthy ones. They have had swim bladder problems that show up a couple weeks later. Most likely caused from the way they were captured. With that said, How long has the LFS had them?

I have 3 in my tank, started with 1 male and 2 females, but both females have turned male and luckily no aggression between the 3.

There's been posts of buoyancy problem as seen on here:

As Bradley said, finding a healthy specimen is the key.

I received 2 females on 8/5/10 and took both only 4 days to eat prepared food and swim out in the open. I didn't see them for 3 days and thought they were dead for sure but once they acclimated to their new environment they're wonderful to watch. Very peaceful fish for sure.

Here my thread on them:

Bradley--beautiful collection. I would love to get a male or hope one of the 2 females will change.

Thanks Kevin. I just went back through your thread. I'm very happy they are doing well for you and I bet in time one of your females will turn male.
I did find a hooded a month ago and last week picked up a Nahacky's wrasse.
Both are doing very well.

Bradley, congrat on your new additions. You're killing me here with those beautiful pics. :)

Did you find the hooded on lfs or online? I haven't seen another one since the last one on DD. If memory serve me right DD had 2 pairs last year...one of my biggest regret on fish not getting when it was within reach.

Can't seem to find any hooded so I may end up having to settle for a pair of balteatus instead.

Actually, he found his way to me from a friend in Los Angeles I had put the word out that I was looking for one and he got in touch with me. The nahacky came from D/D.

You just reminded me, I also got a Balteautus also recently. LOL

Wow! I didn't realize even the tail is so good looking. Is there a fairy (besides the over $400) that you DON"T have? lol

WOW Bradley... I think that says it all. Every time I see pics of your Rhomboids I have the urge to get more Wrasses

I've heard aggression between fairies are usually found between females and not the males.

Do you find this to be the case?

Females certainly tend to be more aggressive than males. But the big males do have brawls every now and then. Nothing seriouse though in my tank so far.

@ bradleyj wat coral is the big one in the background, the big circular one it almost looks like a frogspawn and how long have you had it to get it that big

Brad, I always admire your rhomboids. Did you have to go through many to get 3 healthy ones? I previously had a group of 5, 3 females and 2 males. It took me almost twice that many to get 5 good ones. Between parasites and swim bladder problems it was a nightmare. It finally came together for a few months and then... tank crash. Lost 4/5 of them and the one to survive was one of only two fish in my tank to make it.

That was earlier this year and I've since recovered. I've been keeping my eyes open for females as I have a nice male now, but haven't seen any for a while.

That is a branching hammer. I bought it about 3 yrs ago and it had 7 heads on it. Now who knows how many. It's as big as a beachball.

Over the years I've had around 7 rhomboids. Lost 3 due to poor covers and 1 too a virus. These last 3 have done really well for me. I've never had one that experienced a bladder problem. Lucky I guess.

I think I'm very lucky with the 2 female rhomboids on the first try. But have lost all the following wrasses on the first try: pair of flame, pair of exquisite, pair of scott's, couple of female pink margins (the male of a pair is still alive), 2 female naoko's. I was so discouraged with wrasses that I didn't touch them for couple of years and only recently I'm getting back to setup a tank around them. Looking at Bradley's tank who doesn't want a wrasse tank. :)

Jacob D--reefhotspot.com have the females on sale now.

My hammer is about 20 inches downstream of my vortech. I feed my fish spectrum pellets about 3 times a day from that corner so that the vortech will send it out through the tank and all of my fish get a chance to eat. Quite a bit of it lands in the hammer . I believe that is why its done so well. Too well actually, I don't think I could get it out now without breaking some coral. The thing is huge and still growing.
