Golden Tonga Blenny (not so golden)

So I finally found a Golden Tonga Blenny (at Vivid Aquariums) and it was fairly golden/yellow in the store (not bright yellow) and when I added him to my tank it turned to a brownish/blackish color. Is this normal? Will its color improve and go back to golden/yellow? At the store I asked about its color, and they said that they can change color. Just wanted to see if anyone had any feedback. Thanks!

If they are like a midas blenny then yes. Midas can be brown or a mottled yellow/brown at times.

I am going to assume that we have the same fish....

They can/will shift colors dramatically, at first due to stress, and once settled it will shift when "sleeping". Should note that the older they get the less "golden" and will start to become darker --- I want to say that I remember reading somewhere that they will almost turn black.

Anyways, to show the color shift during night time. (( should note these pictures are about 2 years old, need to get an updated one --- getting darker ))

i've been looking for this Golden Sailfin Blenny for a long time. Did Vivid have anymore of these guys? how much did you get him for?

Liveaquaria has them on the wysiwyg site, but im not ready to pay $75 for him. i might pull the trigger, one of these days.

any updated pics guys?

When I first got mine it was almost as golden as the picture above. Over time though it slowly got darker with a lighter head. Not sure if its diet based or what but mine too is now brown...Not as pretty as when I first got it, but still a neat fish!

I will try to get a new picture of mine tonight, it has really changed since the pic above -- a dusty yellow now.

any new pics? still trying to find one here in the bay area, ca.

Took some tonight -- see below.

Todd, he looks like he's driving the powerhead. My longnose hawk will sit on my tunzes occ. Funny fish.

Wow, I actually never thought of it that way, but he sure does. Have great personality.

Here are a couple from tonight, can see its color isn't as yellow, and the anal fin is getting some black on it, along with a black spot or two on the body. Still eating like a pig.

This one is a bit washed out -- used a flash.

And one of it by my clam.

My midas blenny turned brown with dark grey almost black splotches when he was acclimating. He's bright yellow now that he's happy and over the stress of being moved.

The color changing is pretty amazing and quite more dramatic than I expected...

thanks for the pics. amazing looking fish.

i finally found a LFS out here in the bay area that sells them. just gotta wait for one to come in the shipment now.

Sure thing, and thank you.

Think you will be pretty happy with yours -- mine has great personality and for the most part gets along with my other fish. Once in a while it will "chase" the new angels, but that chase only lasts for about 3 inches until the blenny goes back to relaxing.

just bought my golden sailfin blenny last week from a LFS, Aquatic Gallery here in the bay area, CA. they didn't even know what kind of blenny he was. the worker assumed it was a starry blenny. bought him for only $25. i'll post pics up as soon as i can get a good shot. he's still shy and in hiding.

question: what do you feed urs? i kno they eat algae, but do you feed anything extra?

I feed mine a mix; LifeLine's Herbivore mix, Rod's food (( green, blue and red labels )), Prime reef, PE mysis, and Spectrum pellets.
