Goldflake Angel...

Just a quick update

Just a quick update

After 15 weeks the GF is still kicking. The past week the bulge appeared to subsided quite a bit but still noticeable. The caudal fin appears to be ragged but swimming much more normal and not just hanging in one position. All of a sudden he's started eating chopped shrimp and squib along with PE mysis for the first time. He's been on pellets the last 6-7 weeks and wouldn't touch any frozen. I'll continue to post update.

btw--The Regal is doing well also and eating pellets aggressively but still doesn't touch frozen.

Ryan--any update on your GF?

Good to hear Kevin!

Im still quite frustrated/ confused by mine...

I had pulled it from the Display and put it in the Frag tank that is connected to the main system. I kept it there and it continued to eat great. REally eating everything I put into the tank. His most significant symptom is his swimming. He just doesn't swim right. He bumps into rocks and frags and kinda bounces off the bottom. But as soon as I throw some food in the tank, he darts right too it???

I did a FW Dip and didn't notice anything come off. I also did 2 one minute bath's in BiFuran+. He seemed a little better after these. a few days after that, I decided to treat him in a 20 gallon hospital tank with Maracyn Plus. The first 2 days I was really worried. He would swim ok for a while and then he would touch his nose to the bottom glass and point his tail towards the surface and then spin around!!! Then as time when on, he got better. After 5 days he was not spinning around any more and looking very good. I decided to place him back into the display to see how he did (tonight).

This is how he is now. Eating great including Nori, and Fat. He is just still bouncing off the bottom every so often???

Any thoughts?

Ryan,

I'm really not sure but doesn't it sound like a swim bladder problem? I've not encounter a fish like ours this long and still talking about it because they usually die within couple of weeks. I didn't think it'd any flukes because you can see symptoms and/or from other fish. Hopefully others will chime in on this.

GF Update

GF Update

Good thing I went with my gut feeling on leaving the GF in the DT instead of catching it to treat med again. At that time it appeared too weak to go through med and let along stress on getting it out. The GF has been eating pellets again since 1/13 and at that time the bulge has subsided a bit. Now the bulge is pretty much gone and started eating frozen mysis again and actually looks pretty plumb.

Now I really think it was gas built-up instead of internal parasites. Hopefully this one is back from the swimming dead.

More good news on couple of other fish:
the Regal with the missing chunk is recovering pretty well also.
the Bandit with the bitten tail is recovering--slooowly.
the 5.5" male Bandit that's been in the QT since 11/19 finally ate frozen for the first time on 1/26 but spits out more than swallowing in. He started to eat pellets on 2/1 and eating frozen mysis aggressively tonight. Never had a Bandit that took over 2 months to eat, matter of fact they usually eat within 2-3 days.

:)

Great Update Kevin!!!

Mine is still eating like a champ, but still swims crazy. I've done nearly everythign I can think of. at this point I think me doing anything else is just doing more harm than good. If someone has a suggestion, Im all ears though.

My plan is now that I know it is not a parasite, I'll just let him enjoy life and get fat inthe display!!!

Ryan, thanks. I don't know what else you can do but let it be. He was looking so bad and I was expecting the worst. Mine was not eating for couple of weeks and stopped swimming around then all of a sudden started eating pellets.

Tim, I was just guessing and it could very well be internal internal infection. Since I didn't have to cut it open we will have to wait till the next one with the bulge.

Kevin

As I said earlier the bulge appeared to be gone and the GF has been eating but this is the second time I noticed the GF has white stringy poop. Does the GF still have internal parasites even though it went through 2 rounds of Prazi while in QT? I appreciate your thoughts on this!

Well the Regal and the Bandit are looking MUCH Better...

As for the GF, I noticed mine was doing the same thing before I pulled it from the display. After I retreated, it has gone away...

Mine is still swimming funny but it is slowly regrowing some of its fins...

Ryan--thanks for your update.

Tim--I thought about it and can't dismiss that possibility. His main diet is mixed pellets comprised of NLS Thera+A and ON Formula Two and occasional mysis. After getting a closer look on another picture maybe I do see some pellets. When it comes off the GF it does appear white/grayish while flowing in the water. It could very well just me being jumpy. This fish has really came back from the dead and I want it to stay healthy so bad. He is eating and swimming normal.

Thanks again for the inputs.

Just wanted to give a quick update on the GF. The past 2 months the GF been eating pretty much everything from frozen to pellets. Now he looks pretty normal to me.

Just got him a female 2 days ago (received on one of the hottest day of the year). The thing I'm concern with is that the body have redness which I'm not positive if it's decompression issue or not.

Very Nice Kev! Im very interested to see how they interact!!!

My Goldflake is the same as it was last update. EAts like a pig! But still swims wierd... It swims liek it has a swim bladder issue. I should try to post a video but it act as though its drunk! It will do flips and even hit the sand, and bump into the rocks which has caused his dorsal fin to become a little ragged...

He doesn't show any sign's of losing any weight though...

Im wanting to pull him but im not sure what to do with him when i do???

I've been thinking of treating with Furan but a good friend and excellent fish keeper said that he suspects that the fish developed scar tissue when it was pinned and it is just protruding onto his swim bladder... It that is the case, I think the only thing that would fix it is surgery!!!

So kev, can we get an update on the BAndit and Regal?

Ryan,

Sorry to hear your GF hasn't improved yet. Its tough to watch a fish not swimming right.

The Bandit didn't do well after the last update and died on 2/13. He didn't eat then the next day went into hiding and found him dead the following day. All this happened so fast I really didn't get a chance to react. This hit me pretty hard because he seem to be doing really well and was the angel boss. I didn't see any infection at the time of death. As a precaution I'll be removing the Cross Hatch trig soon.

I originally was going to pair the 3.5" female Bandit with this male but upon his death the other male (received this 5.5" from ReefHotSpot.com last Nov) became the lucky guy.

here's a pic from last night

As for the Regal, he's doing really well and eating pellets more aggressively than frozen.

Well that is good news on the REgal then! Too bad about the Bandit. I know the feeling as I just lost a BEautiful Venustus at about the 24 hour mark for no reason? It really sucked!

So do you have 2 male Bandits?

Sorry to hear about your Venustus...that was a nice one.

I'd 3 Bandits in 3 different tanks and I was just about to pair the 5.5" male I got from Sep '08 with the 3.5" female (was 2 7/8" when I got it in Apr '09) the male died. I ordered a Bandit from RHS last Nov and I got a 5.5" male and this one ended up pairing with the female now.

I surely thought the GF wasn't going to make it couple of months ago and never thought the Bandit was going to die. Maybe the correct thing to do when he got the nip was to treat antibiotics right away.
