Gone Solar Too

Hey Jeff- Please grow a blue tort frag out for me for your Oct frag swap.

Isnt it nice to sell 2 months prior? :)

It's been a while. I was playing with the camera yesterday morning. below are the shots. This is at 7 am with no artificial lights at all. Only the morning sun. Wavemaker is still off so you can see the reflection in the surface water.

I've been out of town. I just got your PM and replied.

I paid about $4500 total. But, I have a concrete tile roof (added cost) and my tank sits directly under a roof joist that I was not willing to cut/modify for the tubes. So, that required extra elbows and a few extra feet of tubing (more cost).

Plus, I had two solar powered attic fans installed.

FYI, the savings has averaged about $125/month since they have been installed.

We had our roof replaced last summer and we bought into the solar tube idea-- had three installed. Nearly a year later, we wish we had more. Excellent set up, sir, you did a really fantastic job. My tank is no where near this size or complexity (I have a ton of other hobbies that keep me from getting more invested in tank keeping), but I have to say solar tubes are wonderful-- the amount of light they let in is amazing and even on a full moon-lit night here in Colorado, you can navigate the rooms with the solar tubes as if the lights were on. So great on you for going this route.

I personally get irritated with the "non" green aspects of this hobby. Although, I have to say, it's really just the electricity aspect that bugs me now that the hobby has passed the throw-away-filter-media phase and uses natural processes to do it now instead. But the amount of energy your tank is now getting from the true power source of this planet is very inspiring! I don't know that I'll be cutting holes in my house to add natural light to my tank, but if I can figure out a good way to do it, I will.

Keep us updated! And more pics!!!! I would so love to paw through your frag tank... some beauties I'd LOVE to add to my tank.

Just a few comparison pics under different lighting. Our club made photo boxes at our monthly meeting yesterday and I'm just playing with my new toy!

Acan echinata. First pic is full sun at 3:00 pm with actinic T-5 supplements. Second pic is same coral at 5:30 pm, no actinics, but 20K MH are on.

I find it interesting (and also annoying) that some corals show almost no difference in color from natural sunlight with actinics during the day to fading sunlight with 20K MH in the late afternoon and early evening.

I just got back from Denver and I am heading to Key West tomorrow (Denver was vacation and Key West is work....go figure!)

This weekend I'll post some FTS in the morning (sun only), early pm (sun + actinics) and early evening (sun + 20K MH)

OK, mother nature has not been very cooperative, It's been overcast/cloudy the past few days. Today is better. Here is a FTS from 9 am this morning, full sun. I'll post some contrast photos as I take them showing the sun with different artificial lights as the day progresses.
