Swelling up like that might be an attempt to move. Lots of LPS corals are known to do this on occasion. (Fungia, Trachyphyllia etc) It makes it a lot easier for a swift current to move the coral in inch or two either way.
It's a normal behavior, I've got 3 of them in my tank and every other day they swell like that - and deflate to normal size in a matter of minutes - I think they replenish the water they store within. Mine even had "baby's" goniopora twice already - started as a deformity on top of the coral looks like a snow cone on top and slowly deatach itself from the main colony. Also stated by swelling up
