Goniopora problem!!!!

I have completed two water changes this weekend do to the issues with my zoas in another post. The zoas are looking better. Now the Goniopora is dying. Polyps are just falling off around the lower edges. I have never had this many problems. This is driving me crazy. I am not adding anything to the water. Just the water changes once a week (with the exception that I was raising the mag level for two weeks) I was using Magnesion-P. I quit using it do to the affect it had on the zoas. Zoas are looking better but within 24 hrs the Goniopora just started coming apart. I have had it about 3 weeks. CA+ is a little high but I have never had a problem with that in any of my tanks.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I ran a 29gal mixed reef for 2 years with nothing but a power head and an HOB with Purigen, changed water every 6 to 8 weeks and was scraping polyps off the sides. Goniopora lived 15 months. I just don't get it.
 
Oh yes and heres test results for the last 3 months. Keep in mind that I had an issue with a bad bucket of RC. This was the reason for a big fluctuation in numbers.

While something may be speeding along the process, dying seems to be the one thing that Goniopora does best. To say that only 1% of Goniopora make it past 12 months maybe erring on the side of optimism.

Thank You! Did you take a look at the numbers on my tank. I mean I have been in this for a while and I just don't see a problem with them. Maybe I am not seeing something.

Nothing stands out at something that could cause a coral to die. We could examine this to death and maybe find something that could have caused the Goniopora stress, in the end it was probably a goner no matter what. Honestly, the one thing you did wrong was buying a Goniopora in the first place. There are hundreds of corals to full up a reef tank with, Goniopora is probably better off not being one of them. So, my advice, don't over analyze things because you lost a Goniopora.

I'd also be surprised if the Mg supplement had anything to do with your zoanthid problems. One thing I have noticed is that some zoanthids do seem to show stress with elevated salinity/SG levels. I have no scientific basis for this but have witnessed in my most recent tank, which is pretty heavily stocked with zoanthids, that they just don't look quite right if I let my SG creep up to 1.027 or above. Just something to consider...

What do you keep yours at? I dont have auto top off so the tank does end up with an avarage of 1.027. Maybe I should start shooting for 1.024?

I do my best to maintain 1.025.

You said you did 2 water changes this week end.How much water was changed out and how many days inbetween?

12 gallons friday
15 gallons sat.

Everything else in the tank is exploding. Looks GREAT! Including the dying polyps.

Goniopora looks like its dead. Tomorrow it will be dead. Its also the last time I waste my money on it. I whoud rather give 50 bucks to a stranger!
 
If it is the 75 gallon then this amount is border line high but i dought it made any differance.
How long have you had this coral?
Do you test for mag before you add?
Whats used for water flow ?
Whats the feeding amount and scedule and type?

I had it for 6 weeks. I use cyclopeze for target feeding and spuralina brine for fish. I feed fish 1 time a day and coral 2 times a week. I have about 2800 gph of water flow between power heads and sump. I have a total of 90 gallons of water.
 
We only feed about every other day to every three days, the fish that is. Corals get Coral Frenzy and brine shrimp by being target fed. But by your water params, it does not look like your over feeding becuase your Nitrate is fine. Maybe Zoa eating nud's or some other pest

Flow sounds high.High flow just as bad.A good medium for your tank around 30 times meaning around 2500 gph.If it is to high this could mean coral cant grab enough food fast enough. Just a suggestion.

Uhhh, his flow is fine and if anything is a little low (depending on what other corals he's keeping). Assuming some head pressure for his return pump he's around 2000gph.

I know you're just trying to help, but I don't know why it's so tough to just accept that there's a good chance his tank and setup are fine. Just about every Goniopora that gets collected dies a rather quick death. The tanks we run nowadays with more efficient protein skimmers and in general more pristine water conditions is probably a factor that hurts Goniopora survival rather than helps it.
 
Captive systems have "more pristine water conditions" than what?

I think Goniopora probably die in captive systems because they lack a food source that they rely on in nature.

I had no trouble keeping them when I used to use unfiltered NSW, now that I use synthetic SW only, I can't keep them successfully.
