Good Flow = Sand Storm

crushed coral may have a couple pros, but it has many cons... to the OP, if you consider this, make sure you research and make an educated decision on whether you want to do this to your system...

again and as always in this hobby, to each their own... ;)

The trick is not to go 'very' deep a layer of .5" is all you need. ;)

You could coat the bottom of the tank with glue and then rub sand into it. Gives the look and feel of a sandbed, but you can point a MP40 at it and not have the sand storm.

Just a thought...

This would work but you lose the natural look you're going for as the sand which doesn't move will become caked in coralline algae. To the OP, I would just go barebottom instead if you're considering something along these lines. jmo

What are you trying to accomplish with your sand bed in this system? You dont have enough for a functional sand bed so why do you have the sand in your display?

i agree, but most likely its for nothing other than aesthetics... as is the reason most insist on keeping sand, and sacrifice any real, actual good flow for...

so many times however i read a post and get "my wife insists on sand, so thats why its in there"...

of course i doubt this is the OP's reason, but these ridiculous comments make me LMAO... is it your wife's hobby or yours? does you wife understand the true importance of flow for sps over sand? highly doubltful in both regards...

again, i doubt this is the OP's reason however, but you certainly see this from time to time... the wife's demands trump the actual proper care of the animals themselves... if your wife is gonna tell you how to run your tank, get another hobby...

sorry for the rant, but i jus read a post like this, and thought i would share my over opinionated thoughts ;)

I myself, am striclty setup for function, not for looks...

JUS MY OPINION, and nothing more...

I have oolite aragonite in my tank right now with a koralia 3, 2 2's, 2 1's, a maximum jet with a 1600 sure flow mod, and a mag 7 return. Just aim your pump from the bottom towards the water surface and that could help. It does take a while for it to finally get nice and clear tho. Mine definitely went more than 3 months before it was really nice looking again.

my vortech doesn't create a sand storm but it does move the sand particles around, which i imagine is healthy.
