Good hardy coral?????

Well, my torch died, within four days of gettin it.....brown jelly. I am assuming it already had it when I bought it even though it wasn't showing any symptoms. Is that possible, I've only had it like 5 days? It went south after the first day, but I don't have any other corals in my tank.

Next question, since my failed attempt at a torch under the advice of LPS. What coral should I go with, polyps? I'm kinda frustrated after the torch died, I feel like I did something wrong! Could use some encouragement. Also how long should I wait to put a mushroom/polyp, etc in to make sure there isn't any residual brown jelly in there that would effect something else?

So how long has the tank been setup? What are the water parameters?

Sounds like this is your first coral. How did you acclimate it to the tank? If it went south from day one, I would go over everything in the tank first before you try another coral of any kind.

If you wanna go with LPS than candy cane maybe hammer, mine are real troopers. Mushrooms and zoos are real easy. Dont even think of SPS!

tank has been up about 3 months....amonia 0ppm, nitirite 0ppm, nitrate 30ppm, calcium 480, temp 80, spg 1.024, ph 8.2.

as for the torch, with no other coral I took the advice of the LFS and just put it in. It did real well for about 2 days, then started to not open up real well, then didn't open, then turned to brown goo. It was 3 headed and he said one head died after he got it. He had had it for a while, I think the brown jelly was still in the dead head and when I put it in my tank it stressed the live ones and caused it to spread to them...because the green one started going down hill 2 days before the purple one...the purple one flopped in less than a day.

Nitrates are high. They should be less than 10ppm and even less is ideal.

Are you saying you just put it in your tank without acclimating it? If so that alone could've shocked it enough kill it. You need to allow it to slowly adjust to your tank temp and chemistry before you put it in. Usually when one head dies it does not afect the others so its ounds like another problem other than spreading infection.

Might not be the best to listen to your LFS if they told you to do that.

Hmm i agree with Salamander, if you just put it in than you have your likly cause, plus the high nitrates which would have been the main reason for the shock. Allow at least 2 hours acclimatisation for most corals and inverts, at least 1 hour for fish. Better luck in the future.
