good LFS

I think they MIGHT be closed today. But to answer your question, its not to bad. They are very friendly, prices seemed fair. I was not impressed with coral selection and colors. They have some great potential i think. I didnt ask many questions to test knowledge.

Planet Reef.
My 2 Cents:
- Fairly young store
- Friendly
- Good knowledge base
- Very much into relationship building
- Good at bringing ideas from other parts of US to STL

ok well here is the deal. yesterday i went. They were closed .
he opened the door for me and turned on the lights over all of the tanks.
i was in there for about an hour if not more. he even took the side off the tank stand to show me the sump set up they had so i could get a good idea for that.
i told him everything i needed to get my tank set up and he told me he would bundle it and knock some of the price off.
plus he even brought me in the back to explain the RO/DI hook up.
with him being the only store that has offered to do so yet i think i may go with them at least until i am needing better corals (i agree their coral selection was nothing to be impressed by.)

on that note. which store do you all use or suggest i go to?
any stores around that are good at forming bonds (i need any discounts or help i can get, with the NO budget im on)

I'd say they did too.

I have not been in there in awhile, but they have had some nice coral selections in the past, at good prices. I would not judge that store's, or any store's, livestock capabilities based on a single visit. Stock levels can fluctuate.

That being said, other stores you can check out are Clayton Pet Emporium, Marine Solutions, and Gateway Aquatics.

Ditto with Dave.

Those are pretty much the only stores I frequent in the STL. I may go to others but I dont buy things there. I have certain things I get at every store.

I feel Clayton has the best snail selection in town.

Marine Solutions has the best drygoods selection and a wide variety of corals.

Gateway has cheaper coral prices with good deals.

Planet Reef has a good fish and dry goods selection, with lots of potential.

I find that every store thinks their prices are the best, I have been told that before and the Petco I was just at had better prices on salt. $50 a bucket is never the best price in town. Once I showed knowledge of the prices in town they brought it down knowing they were full of crap. I have many experiences like this, best advice I could give is pick a store and build a relationship there. But also visit other stores and check prices ONLINE to insure your not being taken. Livestock and salt are about the only things I buy in a LFS. Drygoods are so much cheaper online.

Not trying to bash any LFS but things get expensive in the hobby. Build the relationship to garner deals for loyalty but dont overpay for that 5% discount down the road.

there's no coral because I buy up all the good stuff

I buy salt when the lfs has it on sale. normally 30 - 35 dollars a bucket.

well thank you all for the help. i have been to clayton pet emporium its jsut too far for me, but other than that its great. gateway is about 5 minutes down the road so ill probably try to get going there actually. i alread bought stuff from them anyway. two Seio pumps actually. they were not cheaper online as far as i could find.

i have never been to marine solutions maybe there next. that would be my last store to visit in the area.
i really like gateway for the distance but isnt that great to look at... but i like the amount of stock they have.
i really enjoyed planet reef because of the help and attention i got right off the bat, but the distance is killer. its about a 35 min. drive. and for livestock to get home that might be a bit much dont you think?

I live in IL and that drive is nothing, IMO. Take appropriate containers with you when you plan to get livestock...or even when you don't plan on it. Can't tell you the number of times I've went out thinking I wasn't going to get anything, but then ended up getting something. I take styrofoam containers with me almost every time I'm going to be around a shop or reef people.

i was just wondering if it wasnt too bad for the livestock itself... especially during winter or summer months. but i guess if you keep your car reasonable then it would be okay.
