Hi All,
I have been reading up on mantises for a while now and I think that I'm ready to take on the challenge. What I want to know is what would be a good mantis for an eclipse 6. I would prefer a spearer but any recomendatons are welcome.
Thanks,
Dane

I keep my mantis in a small 6g tank. He's a smasher and about 2" long. He seems to be happy. As far as I know, they don't really need a lot of space, as long as they have somewhere safe to hide.

As long as the system is well run in and stable, doesn't contain a heavy bio-load, and you perform regular partial water changes, this would be adequate for most gonodactylids under about 2.5 inches. That would include species such as Gonodactylus smithii, G. chiragra, G. platysoma, Negonodactylus wennerae, N. oerstedii, and any of the Haptosquilla. A smaller P. ciliata would also work well.

Gonodactyllaceus species such as mutatus and ternatensis are a bit more difficult. I would not recommend a large O. scyllarus, but a smaller Odontodactylus species such as brevirostris from Hawaii or havanensis from Florida would work.

Thanks everybody! I was planning on plumming it off of my reef tank so water qulity shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Mantis shrimp filtration

Mantis shrimp filtration

I'm getting a spear mantis shrimp. (not just yet) I need to know, what's the best filtration to use, is it the ones you stick in the corner? Also, what is the reccomended protein skimmer? Should I add salt to the water after every water change, or when I do a half water change?
