Good skimmer?

Actually Milhouse gave you the best advice out of everyone so far without knowing sump size you could purchase a skimmer to big and you will be back to square one.

Dude you sound like a spoiled kid. How are you supposed to get a good recommendation that will actually work if u don't know what's going to fit. Someone telling you to measure isn't rude it's common sense. You should be thanking him for the heads up. Or just get something that won't fit then you'll be back on here wondering why your skimmer won't fit.

I would suggest that you get the biggest one you can fit seeing that your bio load is going to be high. I am assuming that your 8-12 fish are not all going to be small damsels ofcorse.

But yes measure your skimmer area and post it so people don't waste their time recommending a skimmer that is not going to work for you.

Remember we are all trying to help you and we need as much info as possible to do so.

You know, I love these boards and I've been here for a long time obviously....but it's threads like this! It reminds me of the old Aqualink days(some may remember that forum before Reef Central). Do a little research, give people a little more info and you'll be much more successful. If you can't even measure your sump before coming here I highly doubt you'll have the patience and desire to maintain a successful tank. God I'm sorry I even gave you the basic(and not rude) advice of measuring your sump. Sheesh, lol.

He's been on Rc a month and he's getting lippy with people that have been around for years that are trying to help. His sump is only 9.5 in wide so maybe he can do a little research and figure out what fits. A few listed won't but prob. Should let him figure that out.

IMO, buy the best skimmer you can get. Then build a new sump around it if you have to. Some people have tanks that came with these little itty bitty sumps that can't fit any skimmer that would be right for their system. Its cheap and easy to build a new sump, so don't let a sump get in your way. Of course make sure you don't buy something that is going to be to tall to fit under your tank, and don't forget your going to have to be able to get it out to maintain.

how much space would you need for this? i'm looking to get a skimmer for my 25g system (later upgrading to a 75 so i want to make just one awesome purchase haha). because it can fit outside the sump, how much area exactly would i need to do something like this? do i just need to make sure the footprint of the skimmer fits near/around my system?

If it's any consolation, posts like this do help in the long run because I have a 90g and am also looking for good skimmer recommendations. So I ignore the extraneous tit-for-tat and appreciate the legit comments (especially the advice about measuring)

that sump is tiny, you aint gettin nothin in there that's worth a damn the way it is. if you have a pound per gallon of live rock, I would ditch the wet dry and just dremel out that whole baffle that holds the bioballs in. you might be able to get the SWC extreme 160 in there, and that would be plenty of skimmer for 90g. otherwise, just ditch that mess for a cheap glass tank that you can make a refugium and skimmer combo sump with some eggcrate and call it good.

Katmanblue, if you are going to go with a SWC MSX skimmer, I would go with the 200. I have the MSX-160 and it is great for my tank, being it is only 59 gallons. However, I think on a larger tank, the extra skimmer body volume would be worth the extra $20 or so that it cost. I would think that you would get a better skimate out of the 200.
