IMHO - no it is not.

It is a decent camera, but it is not what I would consider a "starter" camera. If you are a person who is never going to buy another lens, then sony is OK. But, if you are looking to start a kit, the brand you choose is much more important than the camera you choose because you will wind up with an investment in lenses. So, stick with the big players - Canon and Nikon.

I'd look at the Canon Xsi and the Nikon D40/D60. I like Canon and their lens lineup so I went with the XSi. It also has live view which is very handy for macro shots. I don't think that is available in Nikon till you get up around the D90 (though I'm not a Nikon expert so I could be wrong).

suggestions would be welcome.my wife and i would like to get a good camera for each other for x mas..looking to spend around $600 is this possible?

I know this is not going to sound too great, but the best starter cameras are probably the used ones from a couple years back. You can get them for super cheap and they still take fantastic pictures. I've used the Canon Digital Rebel (300D) for several years now, and with it I've really got a good idea of which features were really important to me. There is really no way I would have gotten that knowledge without shooting for a long time.

If you are new to the DSLR world, I would not recommend spending very much on your first cameras. Also, you have to consider that the bulk of your money should be spent on the lenses not the body.
