Good wavemaker for a modded Maxi-jet

I'm planning a 40 breeder reef. It'll likely be SPS dominated. I already have one MJ 1200 with the eco-flow mod, and I'm probably going to get another (I should be able to find another MJ for free somewhere around, and the mods really aren't that expensive).

I'm not asking for opinions on aesthetics or recommendations of what I should use instead of the MJ's. I just want to know what wave makers you've guys used that work well. And by work well I don't mean the Red Sea Wave Master that makes annoying clicking noises every time it switches power-heads haha.

I'd rather not spend $200 on a Tunze controller which I've heard work well. So, has anyone used the JBJ Ocean Pulse Duo? How about any other ones?

I'd get an Vortech MP10, but then the MJ1200 wouldn't be controlled and with the amount of flow that's going to come out of a MJ 1200 I'd rather not have to use it for constant flow. Until I actually hook it up I won't know if it is too much flow, but just in case does anyone know of a way to lower the amount of flow coming out of the unit short of getting a MJ?

thanks in advance :)

I have found the above to be true some of the time. I use the reef fanatic wave creator. Seems like one of the pump will always run normally no matter what an one will run backwards every few cycles; but it doesn't bother me. It just sends flow side to side and not forward. I've never had any issues with using this controller for several years on and off, depending on what other controllers I'm using. In your case I would suggest buying a expandable controll module like the RK series or the Neptune. Both offer pump controll and a bunch of other options. The ocean pulse is not worth buying IMO. I think you can get an RKE kit for $500 brand new and it will help out a ton! Just save your pennys for a few more months ;) HTH

Maybe I just got lucky (or havent ran it long enough) but I've had two modded maxi-jets on the reef Fanatic Wave creator for about 6-8 wks now and it's worked like a champ from day one. I have not yet had an issue where it a pump turned on in reverse. Although, it is a tad noisy now and then...

I probably wouldn't recomend it to someone but I already had the reef fanatic and the maxi-jets w/ magnets...it seemed like it was worth a shot to get the upgrade kits and giver er a try. So far I'm very pleased.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into the Reef Fanatic.

I'm aware that the impeller of the powerhead is likely to start up in reverse every now and then, but from what I've heard it's not too annoying. I've just heard the that the Red Sea one is horrible haha.

If anyone else has any recommendations, I'm still listening.
