Goodbye to LED lighting

You're correct JustPlainFishy. I believe xJake is incorrect. AI is deszigned and built in the US. That was one oif their major selling points when the Chinese made Solaris were falling apart. This situation sux and Orbitec should be ashamed of themselves. How much you want to bet Dick Cheney is on their board?

this thread is title wrong. it shoud be goodbye pfo led lighting. Orbitec is planning their own fixtures , other companies will pay royalties, and fixtures made outside the US should be fine, so the LED lighting is not living.

What wrong with todays' patents, is now you can take new technology and apply it to another non novel use and you can get a concept patent that has very broad claims. I have no problems with patenting new technolgy, but when someone else finds a new use that is somewhat straight forward , they should not be awarded a patent. Again the claims can be challenge in court but it takes big money to do.These patents coming out today can have such broad claims that indicates any use with an LED light with a fish tank is covered rather than maybe .a very noval way to use the LED lights,

If Orbitec is smart, they will allow licencing of their patents to competitors (for a price). The presence of multiple competitors builds the category for everyone.

For example, Orbitec might make a fixture but not have the distribution necessary to reach potential customers. Or, they might make a fixture, but it isn't the right size for some people. Both these would be examples of business they would get a piece of by licencing, otherwise, they just wouldn't get that business.

If they are smart about this, they can use this to their financial advantage. Having the patent isn't necessarily just about being the only one to use it.

Using the patent to put PFO out of the business would not be the best use of this patent.

this is disappointing, to see a company holding back progress of a product, that is more energy efficient, more "Green" for their own greedy purposes.....

one of these days we will progress enough as a species not for the soul reason of greed but the reason to better everyone as a whole... until that time comes we have to deal with crap like this.

edit: this makes me think of the recent patent that the guy tried to patent the idea of thumbnails, got the patent and went and sued EVERYONE! google included

This reminds me of when the oil companies bought all of the original plans and patents for electric vehicles.

Prior art should be easy right? If this patent is from Dec 2004, wouldn't a simple LED moonlight would be prior art? There's a well know auction site moonlight maker... not sure if I can just type out the web link, but they've been around since 2003 if I'm correct.

So I guess this means I wont have an affordable energy efficient light any time soon? I really thought a cool running quiet light was in the near future for me.

Um powermodule, stealth, tx5,contellation, sunpower, just to name a few...
And these lights actually work better than led at this point.

Based on the real math ive seen the solaris was never "affordable".

No a moonlight does not have anything to do with "growth" this patent is for using LED for "growth"

Ahh. Does prior art need to be an inventor who successfully made a prototype or a commercial seller? I follow another nano forum where this has been done semi-successfully for a while.

Returned my H series after months of issues for a full refund a while back.

What happens now to the G/H/I series customers that shelled out thousands of dollars for these units and need to replace LED strips, PS units, controllers, etc. or just want to upgrade or just want a refund?

I received this email in response to an email I sent last night
Dear Aquarium Enthusiasts,

Thank you for your passionate emails and phone calls regarding the recent inaccurate and negative information regarding our company. Due to our ongoing litigation we can not discuss the facts of the case, however, we would like to introduce you to ORBITEC, our people, our products, and our commitment to the aquarium lighting industry.

We have prepared a statement attached above, which will also be posted on our website, www.orbitec.com. We invite your continued comments, and look forward to sharing more information with you on our journey to introduce high quality, reliable LED lighting systems for all marine habitats.

Sincerely,

Tom Crabb

I'd love to know that answer! I have a brand new I5 still sitting in the box waiting for my new tank to be built :(

Maybe orbitec will release a nice working LED fixture since they have more experience working with LEDs

Royalties

Royalties

This article started the news and according to it, PFO was asked to pay 25% in royalties but the refused to do it, or maybe they could not afford that much.

I'd like to know where Reef Builders got the information regarding 25% royalties to be paid by PFO. There was no reference to this statement whatsoever so I take it with a grain of salt.

PFO dropped the ball first by not patenting their product. Then they dropped the ball in producing units with lousy quality, as evidenced by all the issues people have had with them. Then they charged a ridiculous price. They also most likely got these built cheap since they were manufactured in China except for the new I5.

To me it looks like they were in a hurry to be first to market to make $$$$$ and did not do the due diligence, prototyping, and manufacturing research prior to introducing their product. I welcome Orbitec into this market.

DISCLAIMER: I have nothing to do with Orbitec whatsoever....I just want affordable, high quality, well designed LED lighting for my reef tank.
