As you all know one of our most helpful reefers here on RC had a housing issue that led to the temporary shutting down of his tank. I voluntered to "Googly sit" and here are some photos and video of Googly... BTW it was nice to meet the both of you :wavehand: Googly took shrimp from the skewer this morning and ate it.

I sad to say I think the big brittle starfish didnt make it... he seemed stressed kept laying upsidedown. Id prop him up he'd walk around and made a wrong turn last night. all I found were pieces of his legs and the maxi mini got part of him! Im sorry :(

Doh, I didn't expect everything to make it. Ahh well. Googly looks happy and healthy though and he's the main creature. :)

The electric blue knuckle hermit is really pretty.

Stop feeding your tank so much! Get those nitrates down. :D

Don't forget there is a dedicated mantis owners forum here on RC. Really awesome people in there, some gorgeous set ups and stomatopods, and all the info you could ever need to know and then some about Mantis shrimp and googly the cuteness destroyer.

Thanks for googlysitting. I really hope I can find a new place soon and set back up quickly.

Oh, you can try laser pointers also, Some mantis will chase the little red or green dots around. Just make sure you don't shine it directly into the animals eyes. :D

If you search you tube there is a video of someone from here (here meaning reef central) that has a peacock mantis that pounces on the red dot like a cat. It's hillarity.

Im mixing some saltwater and will do a water change today. I had them down to 20 ppm but went up with that new food I got! The starfish seemed stressed befor he made it to the tank he kept flipping upside down and a the hermits were on him. Googly is way cool! After acclimating him a couple hours I put the net in the bucket to scoop him out and he scared the crap out of me when he SMASHED it! LOL!! Then he smashed it a few more times each getting lighter and then he realized maybe she is OK and walked right in the net! Googly seems to like the cave I made and I have heard some SMASHING sounds that are definatly new to the house. My dog Kita is a Sheba Inu & they are notorius for noticing NEW things in the house. She barks at the fuge when he smashes rocks! Pretty funny! I will have to try a laser pointer one of these days when he knows me better. I will read the mantis forum too :)

Googly is living in my CPR 20g Fuge

Great post! Thanks for sharing.
On a side note, you have a very soothing voice, I must admit, I could listen to you narrate videos all day.

He warmed up to you pretty quick. I would cut those pieces of food in about half as those are pretty big for him. He will eventually eat it all but most likely he will bury half of it and spike your water. :)

Also make sure you toss in some various snails and hermits for him to chase around in between feeding. Make him work a bit more for the skewer too, good exercise for him and a good show for you. he WILL GET LAZY if you let him.

Shrimpcity: the more common species of mantis available in the trade are pretty easy to care for. There is an entire subforum here on RC dedicated to them. The biggest issues are water quality for non-tidal species like peacocks, and light intensity as they can get shell rot. Googly there is a G. Ternatensis and live in coral heads, and therefore can handle high intensity lighting and he handles swings a lot better then other species do. (though dont test that theory on purpose)

You don't want a mantis if you cant handle the possibility of losing other tank mates. Some mantis will chase and kill, others get along fine. Seems to vary species to species and individual to individual. Googly lived in my main tank with all the critters areucrazy got as well as a tang and damsel, tiger and candy cane pistols and watchman goby. Shellfish however, as well as shrimp he will murder. Crabs of any sort, dead on water contact.

Look at you...all Daddy's worried about his baby!

Im glad he has warmed up to me already. He is my new little friend that can scare me! LOL Must be a boy thing. :spin1: Today I went looking for him and found him exploring! Here is a video after I shut down the pumps. If you want to specificaly laugh at ME watch the video around 1 min 15 thru 1min 30 seconds!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2o0qrezHvE&feature=youtu.be

I will definatly get him sacrificial hermits, snails, and a crab for him to play with as he is seen in the video checking out the empty snail shell. I do not like the idea of placing things in there to be viciously hunted down and eaten..... but thats LIFE! :strange: and its for Googly!

Hey does this info mean Googly is a girl??
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthro...traca/royslist/species.php?name=g_ternatensis

Color: Sexually color dimorphic; body of both sexes dark green with red inter-segmental stripes; males with blue antennal scales and uropods; females with orange or yellow antennal scales and uropods; meral spot bright orange

Distinguishing Characters: Orange meral spot; red inter-segmental line (occasionally seen in Gonodactylus smithii)

Googly has orange spots

Nope, googly is a male. He has blue antenna scales. Those mustache lookin things on the side of his face. :D Both males and females have orange meral spots.

You can just toss a bunch of various species of snails in there. They are not his favorite food but he will hunt them when hungry enough. I get the not wanting to kill things but its actually bad for him to not hunt something now and then. He will get fat and lazy enough just from skewer feeding. Don't kill my mantis with morbid obesity! :D Daddy *IS* worried. It took me MOONTTHSS and way to much money to get my hands on him. Not to mention after you have him for a while you will see he is a LOT smarter then most anything else in a fish tank, and smarter then some cats and dogs it seems. ;)

Also you dont need to be scared of him. Once he got used to people as long as you dont go sticking your finger inside his den he wont mess with you. A lot of mantis owners hand feed. Not me, but others do. :D He only popped me once when I was catching him to move tanks and he jumped the breeder box I trapped him in and popped me on the knuckle. Messed me up good and took almost 2 months to heal.

Keep posting in the mantis forums, especially your videos. They love em there and will give tons of advice on anything I might have missed. Dr. Roy Caldwell is also a leading mantis expert and actively posts there.

I promise not to make him fat n lazy like my cats! :) I will get him things to kill :) I gave him a much smaller piece of shrimp last night and he swam up and stole it befor I could make him "work" for it. He has actually come out and looked at guests already! If Im next to them he will come and check us out. I love the way he looks at me. The intellegiance is certainly coming thru his googy eyes! He makes eye contact! Hope all is well with you and let me know about that big pistol shrimp my aurora goby is lonely.

Hello my fellow mantis lovers :) I have bad news... I know Googly & I haven't posted here in awhile & unfortunately this is the final post for my wonderful underwater friend I never knew I could love so much! Googly passed away a couple weeks ago and everytime I look into his empty home I feel so sad. I never thought I'd miss him so much. Googly was by far the coolest little critter I have ever had the privilege to take care of. I never knew I wanted a mantis shrimp until now.. Googly looked forward to seeing me as much as I did him I think. Googly was a super smart amazing creature who has managed to smash my heart into little pieces & I will never forget him. :)

Sorry to hear about your loss! It looks like he had a great run and enjoyed life though! Planning to get another in the future?
