Gosh Darnit Carpet Surfers!!!!

I had two false clowns in my QT tank and in about a week I was going to transfer them to my display. I went to check my tanks this morning and come to find one of the clowns missing! I looked behind the tank and there he was, a crusted fish chip! What is with certain fish, do they have suicide issues? Now I have to figure out if I still want to keep my maroon clown (bought the Clown Pair so I could have a pair) and try to pair her with another maroon, try to add both to the tank (I have a 150 reef), or get rid of the maroon clown and get another false percula to try and pair up. GOD I AM not a happy camper!!!

BTW I did have an eggcrate cover over the entire tank except for a small area where the hang-on back filter was. They always seem to find your flaws!

I know how you feel. I've had a few jumpers over the years. By far, the one who takes the cake was my Scott's fairy wrasse. I was home all three times it jumped. The first two times I quickly located it and put it back in the tank. The last time it jumped, it took me 10 minutes to find it. It had flopped all the way under the sofa and was quite dead.

First time I heard clown carpet surfing. Maybe it was chased by the other maroon. I had maroons in the past and they spawned. They are aggressive and will attack you even when they are not spawning. They get big too. Perculas stay relatively small and peaceful.

I just lost a perc to the mighty carpet. Can't figure out what made him jump, lost a shrimp three days prior to that but nothing before and nothing since. Who knows.

I caught my female tomato clown surfing. Picked her up (coated in that behind the tank salt creep) picked her up and tossed her back in. It was a good day indeed. Two years later she is a breeding fool.

Sorry for your loss, though :(

I feel ya man... Its weird when fish that by all accounts arent jumpers take the dive.. My only casulty was a gorgeous 3 inch long flame hawk (nice and fat too) dove out of my 150 reef.... I got off work and my cat was going bonkers trying to get behind the aquarium.....she couldnt fit but she scratched her head all up trying.....I knew immediately what she was trying to get....I was scared to death because the only fish I couldnt see in the tank was by 8 inch imperator.....but when I got the doors open and removed all my supplies to get back there all I saw was a dried up flame hawk.... I personally love maroon clowns I have one, I would recommend those over the percs....sry about your loss and good luck with the next choice.

My saddest carpet surfer was a bundoon blenny- you don't see them in aquariums often, but this guy had SERIOUS personality. He would pop out of the water in excitement at feeding time, and he slept on his side on the sand against the glass.

Twice he jumped out of the tank while I was standing there, once landing right into a pitcher I had on the floor by the tank, so that was a lucky one. I think he is probably the best fish I've ever had. One of those few fish I put up the $ to ship from LA. Perhaps someday when I have a closed top system I will try another one.

I can't seem to keep the gobies from surfing at night. I lost three of them before I decided not to keep getting them. But I like them so much..........

I'll never forget walking into the office in my old apartment where I had my tank. It was like something out of a movie. Just as I entered the door, I saw a McCosker wrasse go sailing through the air. It was like slow motion, to the point where I swear we made eye contact as he was airborn!

I don't think he was on the floor more than half a second before I had him back in the tank! I did find my yasha goby a few weeks ago crusted into the carpet :-( Pretty sure my dracula goby had something to do with that...
