Got a new Flower Pot coral

So i just got this coral and it seems to be thriving about 3 weeks ago but all ive heard is that they are really hard to keep. Im not feeding it brine shrimp or plankton. Any one have experience with them?

Many here have experience with them, and they almost always die within a year. A little bit higher nutrients and regular feeding of small particulate food will help. Next time do the reserach before the purchase. Goodluck!

It's sad all you have consideration for is the price. Care about the animals and your reef will thrive. It would best to feed it everyday but for most people that is impractical and can foul the water. In your small tank you may be able to get away with feeding it the live or frozen plankton drops. Feed it AT LEAST once a week.

no no no i do like the thing and animals, thats why im asking. and thanks for the website Hormi. I was just saying i didn't do research because it was given to me. I will feed it once a week. I apologize if it came off as if I didn't care for it.

I really like goniopora and have found them pretty easy to keep. Lots of light, good water quality, and feed them. I feed mine oyster eggs, and melted cubes of Ocean Nutrition gel based food like Special Formula VHP. I also use cyclop-eeze and daphnia in my homemade frozen fish food blend so they may be eating that as well. All of mine are 2+ years old, and I have never lost one so IME they aren't all that difficult. Certainly easier than acros.

I have to say, this was an unnecessary comment. This thread was a way to seek information, not judgement. The statement of it being free was just that.

What others are saying about a higher nutrient level in the tank is good advice. It seems that the crappier the water, the better goniporia does. Cyclopeeze is another good food option for this coral type. If you find a place in your tank where it is happy, leave it there. Good luck!

NO NO NO. There is a difference between providing plenty of nutrition and crappy water quality. My tank is primarily an sps tank with some goniopora. Params are kept excellent. It just takes a setup that can handle plenty of food (input) and still keep water quality very high (export). High nitrates, phosphates or generally poor water quality and they won't do well just like other corals. They get plenty of food in the ocean that doesn't mean the water they live in is crappy.

Yeah, you're right. My wording wasn't good at all. I'm thinking water that isn't skimmed to pristine clean quality, which is necessary for some corals, not so much for lps. You are right on.
