Got a tank on the way. I'm going to need some help with parts.

Hello everyone. My name is Dave and I'm somewhat new to the Salt water world. I've had a tank before(years ago)but it was cared for by a friend who knew everything.

I am limited on space in my current house and my other one I will settle in when the Air Force lets me move back, so I had to settle with a 65g reef ready tank. It's 36" long, 18" wide and 24" tall. I was limited to these on the width and length and didn't see a need for more than 24 inches in height. It has a 1" drain and 3/4" return in the bottom with a standoff. I didn't get a lid or stand because I'll be building my own to match my home. It's going in my living room here and in my bar/gameroom in my other house when I get back there.

The tank is going to have a fullreef setup with fish, LR and LS with corals and plants in it.

I've read through a ton of these posts and been through many different sites for info and parts. My plan is to build the stand and lid to accomodate as big of a refugium I can build as well as give room for the lighting needs. This leads me into a question....

I see alot of people use MH and T5 lighting with day/dawn/dusk/night simulation incorporated in their system. I haven't seen many posts on how you go about building a setup like this. Are there any DIY sites out there or complete built setups already to purchase this setup style? What wattage and type of lighting should I get for my setup? Ultimately I'd like to get one of those "The package" deals rom TBS but I'm going to wait until I'm settled in the new house for that. I'd like to set up my hardware for that type of setup though. I'm going to still use a refugium setup regardless if they're needed or not so I can have the heater and skimmer,etc.. in there and out of sight.

What would be some of the good quality skimmers, heaters, pumps and powerheads to use.

I'm looking at building a standalone wave maker setup for the top but will probably have to have 2 powerheads down lower to have good flow on the bottom of the tank.

I'll end it there, I could go on and on with questions but will take it slow. I'm anxious to get back into the fish hobby. I've seen and studied many setups throught he years saying "I'm going to start one up someday". Now after I have to slow down and get less physical hobbies, I want to pick this up as one of them. Plus my 2 and 3 year old boys just can't get enough of Nemo.

Thanks and I hope to talk to many of you in time to come.
Dave

Current USA has the Outer Orbit in 36" with 2x250w MH, T5's and LED lights. I have a 60" one for my 156g Oceanic and I like it.
Some people don't like the bulbs it comes with but I don't mind and won't replace them until the original ones are worn. You can do the day/dawn/dusk/night simulation with timers.

I haven't tried them yet, I have Tunze powerheads, but a lot of people love the Koralia's.

I like that outer orbit setup as well as the SunDial T5HO setup with built in timers. I don't see a price listing anywhere though.

Thanks guys.

Dave

I bought my Outer Orbit here:

http://www.aquarium-supply.biz/Current_USA_Outer_Orbit_T5_Metal_Halide_s/319.htm

At that time they had the cheapest price with free shipping and I was very happy with their customer service. One of the T5's was broken when it arrived and the mailed out a replacement the same day I called.
Just to give you an idea, there are lots of places online selling these fixtures. Maybe you might find it cheaper somewhere else but about two months ago it was the cheapest place.

I have Gina's site saved. I saw the fixtures there but never dug deep enough into them to realize their setups. Would my tank need the full 300w halides and a total of 470w? I don't know what a good lowe/upper limit of light is for my tank. I'm only on page 3 of 13 on the light info post by WaterKeeper. I have a long way to go.

Thanks
Dave

By Gina's, I mean Aquarium-Supply.biz.

Thanks for that link. I like the 6x39 T5HO setup and it's price. Would I still need to suplement MH's for a reef or no? I'm getting anemones for a reef setup and have read that they are the best lighting for anemones. If T5's will work with great results, then I'm not worried about the "best" for them then. I want good plant and coral growth and brilliat lighting as well as the dusk/dawn feature and the LED's for night. I don'twant to unnecessarily over do it. I see I'd have to add the LED's but that's not hard to do at all. Will this 234w work for a total wattage? I've been recommended a 470w and a 234w setup. I like the lower wattage power consumption but I know the lights are one of the biggest factors in a setup.

Gez, I just read my own posts. Sounds like I'm looking for the magical "This is the perfect setup for you" answer. I'm still reading/learning. I've saved the links of each of these lights. I'll get it figured out. Is there a watt per gallon ratio or something?

Thanks
Dave

look in the diy forum for wavemakers.....
also...a good staring point for lights is in the for sale forum on this site....seems that SE MH light are no longer the flaovor of the month...you should be able topick a MH SE systems cheap on this site.....

in fact...you pay shipping and I'll give you my 250w MH (magnectic) all in one ballast. You need to get a spider reflector and a bulb...and bobs your uncle.

Thanks for the link. I found a site off there that has some good refugium setups in there for not too bad of prices and that will fit in my stand dimentions.

You serious about giving the stuff away? I'm thinking of a smaller 4 bulb T5 setup with 1 or 2 MH's as well.

Thanks
Dave

The 243 wattage is not strong enough for what you what to keep. I don't know what i was thinking but the one that I suggested won't work either. What other light were you interested in? Once you get the lighting figured out you should start another thread.Just ask one question at a time and you will get so much help, I promise ;)

Im interested in the idea of a full setup with fans, lights and balasts to help with the full day action but I don't know what wattage I'd need for my tank size and depth. Once I know that, I can start looking for the setup I need.

After reading many posts, I think I need to go one of two ways. One is with 1 or 2 MH's and 4 T5's or the other where people are swearing by 6-6 T5's of different range and bulb types.
I just want a general wattage need and what way I should go for my needs.

I think the setup you suggested was nice with a compliment of MH's and LED's. I'd like to get it all in one package if possible. Alve made a good suggestion and I like the setup with a total of 470w and a complete package. The $600 price was a sting but if it's needed......

Dreed, at first I was going to go the DIY route and was going to build my own canopy and buy MH's and T5's to put in.
I did not use any plywood in my stand and didn't want to use it in my canopy either. After I calculated the cost of buying hardwood, paint, stain, MH's with reflectors, T5's with reflectors, LED moon lights, fans... It would have costed me more then what I paid for the Outer Orbitz. The fixture doesn't need a canopy and I have it sitting with legs on the tank (you can also hang it on the ceiling, comes with the hardware).
After all I am happy with what I got.

Thanks. I have been reading on this all night and I think I'm liking that setup. I was looking at the smaller setup with the 2 150w MH's instead of the 2 250wMH's. I agree, after looking up the prices and combing the classifieds, I might just want to go and get one of these units. They have plenty of spread lighting, all the features I need and all in one compact setup. I think the amount of lighting is enough and can just play with different bulbs to get the coloring I like. The wife's going to have a fit when she hears what I'm about to spend on lighting.

Alve, do you have any pics ofd your setup? How deep is it? I'd like to see a general idea of what I'm looking at buying.

Thanks a bunch
Dave

I just realized you said you don't have a canopy. I will so i guess that means I'll have to do the retro thing. I read about a few ways to do this. Looks like I have more reading to do. I'm in that 20 page read from GrimReefer now and I'm nearning a bunch. That guy's going crazy with all the questions.
