Got an infection from the tank

I was helping a friend move his tank inhabitants yesterday. We moved the tank last Wednesday and got it all set up. All we had to do yesterday was move the rock, corals, and fish. I cut my finger very lightly (there was less than half a drop of blood. It stung really bad, but I figured that it was just saltwater that was doing it. The cut (see pictures below) is less than 1/4" across. I did it at like 10:30am and it continued to hurt more throughout the day.

About 2:00PM I noticed that it was swelling and it was painful to move the top knuckle joint. At 5:00pm the finger was getting red and the swelling had moved to the second joint. The top knuckle could only be moved 20 degrees or so before the pain was unbearable.

By 10pm it was even worst so I took a couple Ibuprofin and tried to "walk it off" over some sleep. I set my alarm for 2:45 so I could check my hand. I made a deal with my wife that if it got worst at 2:45am we would go to the ER. Well, I woke up, took a couple of Ibuprofin, and looked at it. The swelling was getting a little worst and the redness was increasing.

I didn't go to the ER then because I didn't see any red lines going up my arm. By the time I woke up at 7am, there was a red line going from my first knuckle to about halfway up the inside of my forum. I had been researching on the net and know that you can get some nasty infections from a tank. I made the decision at 8am to go to Urgent Care (not the ER).

I finally saw the nurse and she said it was definitely infected and she prescribed me two types of antibiotics and some super strength Ibuprofin. My wife is picking up my prescriptions now so hopefully everything gets better tonight.

The nurse made sure to tell me twice that I NEED to go to the ER if it gets any worst. I will definitely be following her advice. The pain is pretty intense. It hurt(s) more than my appendix did when I had appendicitis. I would guess a 8 on a 1-10 scale.

So....... I know everyone wants to see some pics.... Make sure you all be careful.

Note the red line/rash going up the inside of my arm. The line currently goes up to my elbow.

yeah, it's swelled up a bit and causes pain in the joints. I don't want this to happen again (especially if it gets worst subsequent times). It's weird though. I've gotten stung by anemones, stabbed by fish spines, gotten stuck by bristleworms, and plenty more, but never had any problem before. It was such a small scrape, the pictures and swelling make it look larger than it really is.

Welcome to my world.

I have injuries like this kinda often. Have had a number of pretty serious scares that included fish TB and worse. But have to admit that I have been very lucky.

When I get a cut or any injury in the aquarium I make sure to wash it with atibacterial soap asap and apply antibiotic cream. Many times the reaction, in terms of swelling and yellow puss is not an infection that is best treated by oral antibiotics. This is something that I learned from E. Borneman and later from my doctor after he researched the topic.

I wouldn't stress over this too much at this point. Unless it doesn't look like its getting better within 3-5 days. Just keep it clean and put some antibiotic cream on it. No bandaids, let it breath and keep that hand out of the fish tank (thats the hardest part for me)

wOW CRAZY! Us reefers and our reefs! Actually really bad for u cause it wasnt even your tank!!!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

G, I will definitely be going to the ER if it gets worst. What have you usually seen as a recovery time? I need to have dexterity in my hands for work (sys admin and setting up AV equipment).

If you keep it clean I would say within 72 hours it should close up and heal in a week or so. It normally takes longer for me only because I have to continue to keep both hands wet servicing aquariums, I also can't keep the antibiotic cream on the wound because my hands are in tanks all day.

I am a hypocrite... Overall lesson here is to use gloves at all times to prevent this. I think for most hobbyists it would be a pretty easy thing to do as you guys don't have 200 tanks to take care of and putting on gloves 50 times a day gets old.

I have had something similar from moving a fresh water tank. Mycrobacterium is pretty serious stuff. I don't believe I had mycrobacterium since the antibotic I was given worked well but my finger blew up just like yours withing a few hours. The antibotic needed for mycrobacterium is a three month process from what I understand. Steve Pro from IceCap has done several lectures on things you get from your tank and has gone through having it. If you continue to have issues, you might want to reach out to him.

Harbor Freight sells some gloves for tanks that are pretty cheap. I ended up buying some high end commerical gloves from northern safey that are good but it is hard to used for detailed work. Just for moving and taking out live rock they are the best. I use to use them all the time and slow got away from using them. Good luck!

Soemthing came to mind as I read this - isn't it odd how many aquarists will be quite concerned about illness/ infection in their system, and attempt quite aggressively to prevent it, but will not give themselves the same level of thought.....

I have seen these types of wounds several times (in myself and others), and they can be quite serious, so please don't hesitate getting treatment again. Here's hoping you heal quickly.

After Hours can definately be beneficial, but I'm glad they told you this. I just spent last night at Strong as the meds After Hours put me on Thursday weren't properly taking care of a severe medication allergy. Strong was able to keep me monitored and constantly adjust to find a combination that worked.

Hope it heals up and feels better for you super soon! :)

Just wanted to let everyone know Joe had to be admitted to the ER last night for an overnight stay. I or he will keep you guys posted on his condition
