Got an infection from the tank

Brian's reaction was so severe he had to get out entirely on doctor's orders.
I don't wish that on anyone.

Open cuts exposed in the aquarium are a bad thing.
Please update us ASAP.

This is second hand info from his wifey but the doctor said it wasn't a tank related infection but rather a cut from the tank that coincidentally got infected. Joe is doing better and the pain has lessened, they are keeping him again tonight and I'm waiting to hear back from his wife as I plan to go see him later if he's up to it. I will keep the updates coming.

It looks like someone is starting a collection of the hands that have tapped on the glass of the aquarium. :)

I'm glad that things are looking better. I hope that Joe heals quickly!

Sorry for not updating this thread for a while. Ivebeen sleeping a lot. They think the infection is a type of streptococci, but they are still waiting on cultures. They have me taking a bunch of different antibiotics. I get an iv of them every 6 hours or so.

I have been seen by a couple infectious disease doctors. They should get the cultures back tomorrow am. The redness has faded to a pink, but it is still spreading. I have a red streak all the way To my armpit now.

I saw a surgeon today because they were concerned about my joints and tendons getting inflamed and causing permanent damage. They actually cut my finger open to try to drain it (holy crap did that hurt), but nothing came out.

I'm guessing that I had the strep on my hand and getting a small cut pushed it into my thumb resulting in cellulitis.

Hopefully they discharge me tomorrow, but I don't know if that will happen. I've got some updated pics, but they are a little more graphic. I will email them to anyone who wants them though.

Half the time doctor's a wrong anyway's, I was supose to die 6 years ago! Hope you feel better. I would also like some gross picture's.

Pics sent to those who wanted. I'm a bit surprised that my thumb is feeling as well as it is. I will definitely be using gloves now. A bunch of my family members are already asked if some aquarists use them.

I will make sure to keep updating. One good thing did come out of this though. My mother in law teaches nurses and will be using my pictures, story and treatment procedures to train her students. Maybe this will help train a few people and the next person who gets this has an easier time and receives better care.

gotta love it when your pics get used to teach someone else what NOT TO DO. sorry, i am laughing...but it did make for a chuckle. I am glad you are feeling better.

i was working in my tank yesterday, with an open wound...this could come back to bite me.....

Good news. I am going to be discharged today. They are going to put me on two different oral antibiotics for a couple weeks. They should clear everything up. Lesson learned from this:

Wear gloves whenever possible. They may make your dexterity go down, but they could save you a lot of pain and four nights in the hospital.

I am SO glad you are well enough to be released. How long do they think before the infection is completely gone with the antibiotic treatments?

I'm on two different antibiotics. I will be on them for two weeks, so it should be cleared up by then.
