Got Ick???

Ok, all my new fish has ick now. regal angel, naso tang, and bicolor parrot.

For FO tank, whats the best method to treat ick? Should I treat the whole water with medication? garlic wont work since regal and naso wont eat. i tried feeding live brine but only parrot is eating. i also prefer not to do freshwater dip.

i do have a 30W UV Sterilizer that i will install today but what about the ick already attached to the fish?

My tank inhabitants are zebra eel, regal angel, parrot, naso tang, herlequin tusk, lionfish, 3 sand stars, 2 brittle stars and octopus.
i have 3 tanks connected to a big sump.

if i do use medications such as copper or methylene blue, is it dangerous to octopus and eel as it is to starfish?
i can separate one tank free of copper and then use carbon to remove medication later.

For a fish only setup here's what i have done with much success.

1st lower your SG over a period of a couple of days to 1.010 for a period of 3 to 4 weeks.

2nd I also used Kick-Ich by ruby reef. Treat for 14 days per directions.

3rd If FO? Use copper treatment and test copper levels. Maintain .15 to .25 mg copper for 14 days or per instructions.

Do not run any carbon at this time and may want to shut off UV light per med directions.

powder blue is right. dont expect ot see all the spots dissapear in a day, the meds including copper can only kill the ick in certain stages of its life cycle. you should see spots on the fish for 4-7 days before any improvement. also i should mention that most fish do not die from the ick paracite itself but the open wounds on the gills and body that become infected, so i would also dose with some melafix.... i swear by that stuff.

i found out that since i have sand substrate and LRs that i cant use copper cuz it will stain the sand and rocks.

Is melafix safe for interverts and doesnt stain rocks and sand?

i plan to install the UV and may try hyposalinity method.

Install UV ASAP. The ich already on the fish will fall off, if the fish is eating and healthy. There is a strong chance it will not become reinfected again if the level of ich in the water remains low (killed off by the UV).

If you really want to get rid of the ich you need to place all the fish in a quarentine Tank [ I would put the eel in his own seperate qt, they are very resistant to ich..he may be okay] Drop your SG to 1.009 and leave your main fallow for at least 4 weeks....otherwise, you'll be battling ich for a long time

I thought you couldn't use Copper with a a Eel. If all tanks are connected by the sump then the eel with be in conntact with the copper. I would do some more research before adding anything to you main tank. Yes Melafix works great.

If not able to use copper I would recommend Hypo and Kick-Ich! :) Yes Melafix works great!.. Smells great to.. Most defin

I got a question regarding the use of kick ick. its says 1L bottle can treat 75gal tank for 2 weeks. i would need at least TWO 2L bottle which costs around $46 total.
I really wanna know whether kick ick is worth $46 and if it really works well?

is there any other cheaper alternative medication that may be just as safe as kick ick?

I have been told by reputable experts that kick-ich is not entirely reef safe, and that it won't effect a cure. However, I know from experience that hypo- saline works, not to mention how buff one gets from all the water changes. And remember, R O water needs it's ph adjusted! Almost killed my foxface with low PH. So you'll be dealing with this a month or two- royal PIA, or off and on for a long time if you go the quick route- very tempting, I know.

I just finished using it in my tank with great success. It took about 3 weeks. I also turned up the heat in my tank.

i installed the UV couple days ago. i dont think im gonna try any other ways. due to lack of time, i cant do hyposalinity nor do i think any of the meds out there (except Melafix) will be safe for my tank.
ill leave it up to their natural immunity to fight off...

 I have 2 tanks with Tangs going through Hypo now, one tank is upstairs [3rd floor] the other in the bsmt ..I should be lookin like Jessica Simpson with all the water I haul up and down stairs:lol: [Unfortunately I am looking more like Marge Simpson these days;) ]
I do agree, These so called 'reef safe ' products are a waste of money..at best they might buy you some time. Your just putting off the inevitable

if you are concerned about live rock dying off use kent's rxp, it does a good job but needs to be used in conjunction with poyox to be truelyeffective

my concern when i have to place fish in a quaranteen tank is that, i will be skimmerless since my ASM G5 sits in the sump.

can they handle without skimmer for a month and only depend on bacteria from LR and LS?

ps. my LR is basically base rocks with no inverts.
