Okay, so it's bone.... solid CA in a different organic arrangement :)
These antlers can grow as much as an inch a day!! Imagine our reefs had that growth!! This guy was just shedding the Velvet.

Another from earlier last week. Handheld, a tad soft, I'm bad. IS will only get you so far. I was really MTN biking and just happened to take a decent camera hoping I might find these guys... and I did. The visible rack in the background was pure chance and luck.

Nice shots.

Your next task will be to get some macro shots of the velvet.
Just let us know where you do it so we can send someone to retrieve your camera. :D

As doclie as this dude was I could probably have done it! However, I will not be doing that anytime soon :) for the many obvious reasons (and yes I know you were just joking;))

The standing one at one point was so relaxed and mellow he actually laid down and put his head down on the ground to nap out. Another photog and I were only about 30 feet away from him. I knew they were ok with us being close and taking pics (because of their body language and actions) but I was very suprised that they were THAT comfortable.

Let me guess... powerline pass?

I was up there last week, got a whole bunch of good ones. Maybe when I get home from work I'll post them.

:-) A-valley has some good fall colors right about now. I was up at the missile site earlier this week and got some nice ones of a Sow and her cub with a bunch of berry pickers in the background :)

hey, what part of alaska are you in? I just went to Faribanks, Denali, and Seward this summer. It was amazing!

Yup powerline... Ah, a local....finally. You live in Los Anchorage?

Yeah, just got back from Denali last weekend. Took over 1500 frames. Must be outta my mind, but I did get some killer shots. Pr

Griz in Arctic Valley huh? Seems like they are everywhere this year but I haven't seen one (in town at least). Based on this years stats I guess I should be happy 'bout that.

Don't really know if the suicide rate is higher. In fact I think that may be a myth, but I cannot confirm that. I agree with Frozensurfer, if you like to be active and like the outdoors there is NO PLACE in the US like this. It is a vacation every single weekend for me.

Here is a shot of a "wild" moose in Denali national park. He had just shed/lost/ripped off his velvet not long before. The rack was still basically bloody. That piece hanging in his eye was making crazy. Poor willows, he was trashing everything around trying to get it off.

Great pics! We spent some time in Alaska a few years ago and I would love to move there! We saw quite a few moose, but none seemed as docile as those. We came a little close to a mom and 2 calves while hiking and she was not very happy. Unfortunately, we were too busy going around trees to get any good pictures.

Yeah I was born and raised in So. CA, moved up to AK and back 4 different times for different jobs. Spent a total of 2 full years here, and finally landed a permanent job (See my avatar.) So I'll be here for at least 5 years. :)

Denali is nice but there are too many rules and regs for me. I'm more of a "get out and enjoy nature" type... not the "here's my permit to camp here" type.

I hiked wolverine yesterday and got some nice shots of Dahl sheep. Can't wait for the winter to come so I can get some shots down at windy corner.

No Griz, just some black bears. Saw a griz on Wolverine.... about 100 yards from me.... made me happy I had the bear swatter with me.

I will agree that it is a vacation everyday for me. There is ALWAYS something new to see or do! There are MILES and MILES of trails, tons of places to camp, and lots of photo ops.

They are not always docile... this guy was ****ed. I kept a heathy distance from him. The drooling and snot running out of his nose were a pretty clear sign to kkep back :) Ears down, also not a good thing :) Makes for an interesting experience though.

As I got there there was another bull walking away. I think that is why he was so rilled up.

Is it just me or does the bull in the first pic look like super moose on steroids? Massively muscular but I'm no expert.

I think it's just the angle, but you'd have a thick neck too if you had to support those things! If memory serves me right they can weigh over 75 pounds a piece. I've heard about (and maybe even seen?) Moose with 70+ inch spreads.
