well im very angery an sad to report that my 55 reef got bombed by a heater that broke and cooked almost everthing i lost a 2 tangs mount xenia blood red cleanershrimp,skunk cleaner,purple firefish an a bunch of coral but i saved my clwns midas blenny coral cats an carpet anenme i wanted to sugest never use marineland glass heaters o plus i got shocked to all hell lol nice 110 watt shot i changed 25 gal of wter an dosing with carbon to help pull the toxins out but if there anything i didnt do please help

Glad to hear you're okay after the shock!

If the water wasn't hot enough to kill some fish maybe it didn't kill much of the micro fauna on the rock and you won't have a big cycle to contend with. What kind of corals did you lose?

Well my christmas present was my wife blew the engine in her 2002 ford explorer. FWIW have you tried not using a heater. My tank stays around 80 without one. House is 74-78

I had a heater "explode" on me too... woke up in the middle of the night to 120v arcing at the top of the tank. It didnt go "into" the tank and everything was fine.

titanium heaters next time!

Very sorry to hear and thanks for the warning. FWIW I use the Unbreakable ones that have the hard plastic on the outside- not had a problem but you never know. Very sorry to hear about your fish - good thing you're OK.

I agree, but there is a lot less chance that they'll actually break Vs glass.

I have my heater plugged into my Reefkeeper controller so I don't rely on my heaters thermometer.

heater size should be about 1 watt per gallon for each ten degreess you need to heat
so if room is 72F during the day and 65 at night, you may wnat to set your heater for 72 or 73 degrees, just so that tank has some thernal stabliity and does not cool off (and heat up) during the night (althought the tide changes, reefs a 50 feet deep move only 3F in an entire year!)
so if your heater is set only 1 to 10 degress above the lowest room temperature, you don't want a 200-watt heater
a 50-watt heater will do
in fact a 25-watt heater will proabbly do the job as the tank takes hours to cool down to the room temperature...

I agree with Acolin. On my 390, I will use three 50 watt heaters, set a progressively lower temps. If one shorts or stays on somehow...limited damage.

The Marineland Stealth heaters are a much better option than the Visi therm. They have an auto shut off if exposed and they're made of hard plastic. I have a 250 in my 90 for a year and no problems. I recommend them.
