Got Stomatopod?

James,

I got 2 crayfish at Aqualife today they were only $1.99 each and bith my shrimp appreciated it very much:) That Chiragra is one mean SOB! Much meaner than Crusty:)

Also He came out quite a bit today will try and get pictures up tomorrow.

i'll have to get some of those crayfish, were they of decent size? i was going to get an emerald crab today but it was too tiny.

I fed my peacock a medium sized turbo snail last night. man, she went to work on thats sucker. she'd get a crack going on one side, roll it over, and start to work on the other side. she broke it down, section by section, until she got down to the meaty bits. it took her a good 10-15 minutes, so she got a pretty good workout in the process.
I could hear the popping sound of her hammering on that shell from across the room...

my wife was actually the one that wanted me to feed the mantis a snail. she was impressed by how methodical the mantis appeared to be in solving the puzzle of the snail's shell.

btw-cameron, your mailbox is full.

I still cant quite figure out exactly what happened...
All I know is I purchased (6) damsels. I divided them among the three chambers... (2) for the side with P.ciliata, (2) for the side with "show me love", and (2) for the 55g below. My intent was to "ration" the amount of available food for my beloved speerer (lol)... :) Within minutes of introducing them, the yellow mantis had taken out one of the two on her side of the tank!

Heres where it's becomes a mystery... I just went to turn the lights off and I gave a quick look into the tank... To my suprise, all (3) remaining damsels were in one side of the tank! (her side)
:wavehand:

I pondered the thought for a minute... but the more I thought about it I was amazed... they must have BOTH jumped over the divider, which stands well over an inch above the water level! If they had jumped the overflow wall they would still be trapped in there...

I did not realize at the time, but I thought I should try a pic with the flash on to see how it would turn out and I (accidentally) caught the "yellow mantis" prowling for food... She couldnt possibly be hungry already!

Believe it, or Not! :p (I dont, and I was there!)

I watched "little lisa" smack the glass of her tank twice last night. she was cruising around exploring, and when she reached the glass "obstruction" she backed up and smacked it (quite soundly I might add). she did that twice in less than 10 minutes, once on each side of her tank. makes me a bit nervous...

on a separate note, i fed her some mysis last night. she really seemed to enjoy it, but i don't think that i'll be doing that very often as it was pretty messy. i think Dave's snail idea (bulk buy) is probably a wise one...

Here is one thing i really find cool about the mantis. reefing is a hobby and great, addicting one at that! But a Mantis is like having a pet almost like a dog or something, because they are so interavtive

Update on my N. Wennerae: I haven't actually seen it since I put it in my 10 gallon on Tuesday but I have been hearing the clicking from it smashing rocks or snails so I think it is doing fine. The tank I put it in has been running for a while without any inhabitants so it has good sized populations of pods and these weird mini snails and I think the mantis will be able to live off of those for a while. I'm not too worried about him being shy because I am just happy that he seems to be staying alive; I have had some bad luck with mantis shrimp in the past.

Hey Guys,

I originally intended this to be a burrow for a large Peacock Mantis, but plans have changed.

It's made of 2" Sch 40 PVC (cemented and cured). I'll drop it off at John's (YourReef). If anyone wants it, I'll tell John it's free to whomever asks for it and makes a minimum $25 purchase there.

Thanks!

Karl

I bought some frozen silversides for my mantis today. she went to work on it immediately, it wasn't all that messy so I think that I'll be using them a couple times a week. For $5 a bag it's definitely a cheap way to go (though I'll still giver her snails and such occasionally to giver her some "exercise"}.

Whoops~Sorry - cleared!

I have not tried the silversides yet, but I defrosted a couple frozen popcorn shrimp (safeway) and they all took it! I cant believe their hungry! : O
