Gracilaria Harvesting From Live Rock

Hi,

I have some red Gracilaria that's growing on live rock I purchased when I set up my tank middle of February, and it started growing pretty fast like about a month ago. It's about 2" in length and still growing!

I'd like to harvest it, but it's well rooted in the holes of the live rock. Can I try to uproot some of it and put it on plant it somewhere else in the tank? I should be getting my refugium sometime this week.

Thanks!:)

Ooops, I guess that didn't make sense........how can I take some of it and re-plant it somewhere else? In the sand or another piece of rock?

Hope this isn't a stupid question????

You can break off some off and wedge it between some small rocks to hold it in it's new location. And also might sexually reproduce (don't worry it doesn't do the Caulerpa type crash routine).

Great, I'll try that and see what happens.

Um, what's a Calerpa crash? Still a newbie.........

Thanks for your reply!;)

When Caulerpa goes sexual, it does a mass release of gametes and disintegrates causing problems in the tank, often leading to tanks crashing. Fortunately when other types of Macro's decide to sexually reproduce they don't go that extreme ;)

Ahhhh, OK. Guess I'll have to read up on my gametes.:reading:

Thank you for replying.....I still have a lot to learn!:fun5:
