My tank is in the process of cycling and green algae is starting to grow. It doesn't seem like green hair algae. What could this be? Is this a problem? I have been ghost feeding. By the way, are you suppose to run the filter while you ghost feed? Thanks

Yes, your filter should be running while cycling. The whole point of cycling is to add/breed the beneficial bacteria in your filter media.

The green algae is normal. Your rocks will probably turn all kinds of colors before coralline algae becomes the most dominant.

It's green hair algae. Today it has grow a little bit and is now showing strands of little hairs.

Oh no...it's over...drain the tank.

Just kidding, seems pretty typical to get this stuff along with other stuff you don't want. There is a ton of info on here, check out some threads. Basically you have phosphates in the tank, since you're cycling just let it go, it's actually helping you if ya think about it. It's using the phosphate to grow.

Once you're cycled this will be more annoying in size, get a phosban reactor and GFO. I had the same stuff, took the rock out and scrubbed it in some salt water in a bucket. Hooked up phosban reactor, and haven't seen it since.

I don't want to ruin my rock scape D: lol

I get the whole scape nuke...I wouldn't do that either, you have options.

What size tank are we talking here?

If it's small like mine, 25g, add some hermits. I have two blue leg bada$$es in my tank and the mowed it down, when it was short and just starting like your picture. They did it in about a week. You could also run a starry blenny I guess they are great for that, I think they're kinda ugly so I didn't go that route.

If you have a large enough tank to support a tang they will destroy algae like a champ. My buddy has a 120 with a powder blue tang that is a nut case on algae.

It's green coraline algae and it will stay or change colors over time. You can easily check by trying to rub it off.

+1, my rocks turned green after a couple of weeks and I was worried it was green algae, but it turned out to be green coralline (looked just like this). Rub it with a toothbrush and if it stays, you're all good. :)

Doh! Missed the OP's update. :(
