Green Algae

My tank will be two years old in august. I am still getting green algae on the glass. Is this normal? What causes it. The only thing I check is PH(8.2), Amonia(0), Nitrite(0), and Nitrate(50). Now I have five fish in a 55 gal. The algae is like a hard texture I have to scrape it off with a razor, its not slimy. It really baffles me.

I don't know of any tank that doesn't require at least some cleaning from time to time. My tank gets some green algae 'haze' on the glass and I have to clean it every 3-4 days or so. If you have heavy algae on your glass then thats not normal.

When you say feeding the tank you mean over feeding the fish. Correct? I feed them a little sprinkle of pellets once a day and that is all.

that is green coralline algae that you are describing---perfectly normal just as the purple corraline on the rocks is.
I put two pin cushion urchins in and they did a job on that(also some of the purple corraline on the rock:eek2: )

I had/have the same issue. I thought it was some other type of algae also, but found out it is corraline. Also got an urchin and he took care of this for me as well.

Cap_n are the urchins reef safe?
This is a coraline algae just green instead of purple?
Thanks

Lou

the small pin cushions or tuxedo urchins are good for the tank.

You just have to watch how much corraline they start eating off the rocks. Its good to have corraline on the rocks--they are taking up space and preventing nuisance algae from using it

Thanks Cap_n

Once again this board delivers good accurate answers thanks to people like you, Michael, and others.

Fotunately I don't have the experience yet to answer stuff like this but in return I just keep getting the Reef Central name out there to anyone and everyone.

thanks again
