started to notice a couple bubbles a few months ago, now I have seen it in multiple spots. I know your not supposed to pop them, but how do I get rid of these before it takes over the whole tank??? any animals eat it?
they can be hard to shift, i had some myself, i siphoned them out, they didnt want to move at first but the suction eventually got them and they ended up in a bucket, persevere and you may get them by the siphon
Good idea Michael. I have a few on one or two of my rocks. My emerald cleaned them off two frags that had them. I put the frags down on the sandbed and he cleaned them up in two days. I guess the crab hasn't found the others yet.
I have found that emeralds will usually only eat the small ones.
Michaels idea is a good one, what ever you do try and stay on top of them or they could get out of hand pretty quick on you.
I used a bamboo skewer used for grillin, took the rounded end and shaved it with a knife like a boat paddle. Took about six or eight out and only popped one as they came loose I started the siphon and popped em loose. keep the siphon close so if one is busted no biggie siphon the goo too
That helps me out, as I to have bubble algea in my tank. The great ways people come up with on these forums to fix or solve there problems are awesome. Thanks for thing out side of the box.
syphoning may be tough because some are in spots I won't be able to get to. So they will always continue to grow. I like the animal idea better because they will work 24 hours looking for these things.
i was able to take the rock with the bubbles on it out of the tank, so that made it easier for me. once it was out i had it in a bucket of change water and used a knife to pry the bubbles off. i did my best not to pop any but did end up popping a couple. after that i rinsed the rock repeatedly with the tank water to wash off any bits of bubble that might be left. so far it seems to have worked.
if you have to work in the tank i like michael's suggestion.
i had one glorw in mine from a rock i got from petco...
what i did is let it gorw pig enough to grab and then kept it under the fosset blowing HOT water on it...then pryed it off and then blew more hot water on it. that way you kill any spore that might have been left behind. dont wash the whole rock...just that one spot.
I have done this with pretty good success. Mix up a kalk paste, pull it into a syringe and cover the bubble algae with it. When I do this, I turn off all pumps including the return. You want the tank still. The BA is usually in a low flow crevice area. Turn everything back on after a little while. The kalk paste will sit on the BA unless it gets hit with some flow. If there are nearby corals, be very careful not to get it on them. This is good for getting rid of small patches of it.
