Green carpet?

I currently have a 90gallon mixed reef with a green carpet. I have a 4 inch sandbed, that the carpet has burried its base into and stayed in the same spot for over a year. My question is I'm about to move everything into my new 120 gallon tank which will be bare bottom. Will this be a problem for the carpet or will it just attach to the live rock or glass bottom? If anyone has any advice either positive or negative please reply.

Thanks chris

Chris, it should attach to the bottom but every carpet I have had has always stayed in the sand and attached its foot to the bottom, several inches of sand in my case. I have not seen one attach to the side of a tank or a peice of rock for that matter so I would assume they prefer sand (doesnt mean they need it, just that most of us keep sand in the tank so that is all I have seen pics of)

Chris:

Mine has usually attached itself to the bottom under my DSB however, there was one time when it attached half of its foot to the back glass and half to the bottom. I'm not sure if this helps or not but thought I would pass it along anyway.

You might want to also check the fish you have. Fish like gobies, firefish etc really like sand. We just had an in depth discussion about BB tanks - pros and cons. Just a little heads up on the subject. I really thought about going to BB but I like gobies and I didn't want to limit my selection of fish and I want to make sure they would be happy.

in my experence my green carpet started in the sand and then moved on to a live rock for three years and i never had a problem with it living on the live rock , but i would also way the pros and cons of a bare bottom tank and take into consideration of wich fish you wanted to add just my two cents

Yes I completely agree that a BB tank has it merits especially with corals and ease of cleaning. The main problem I've been seeing is that we need to make sure we understand the requirements of the other inhabitants. I think after a few more years and more is written about using BB it will be very well established as a great way of keeping corals. As long as we also understand the limitations. This is not saying that the green carpet would not be happy in a BB tank, I'm saying do we understand that it will thrive without sand - JMO.
