green chromis

hi everyone,i have been keeping marine fish for a long time now and have decided to take the next step and try breeding.
does anyone have any tips for me regarding this subject and how many fish i should get.i have a fifty pence piece shaped tank and it holds about 40 gallons of water so plenty of room .it is well established with no other tank mates just living rock and a few anemonie's.

IMO, you probably are best off with a large group. Chromis have the potential to have a male establish dominance, and then start to pick off the others, resulting in a pair or just the male.
Theoretically you can minimize the stress to any particular fish by making it less likely that they will be picked on, i.e. by having lots of chromis.

Some people say buy an odd number of fish to help prevent this, although what the logic for this is is beyond me. I'm not aware that chromis can count. I still think that having more fish is the way to go.

I started with a school of 6 and only lost 1, but then I had to break down the tank, so I don't know if the whittling down would have continued. With my new tank I'm putting in 8 in a 150 gal, so we'll see.

For a 40 gallon, I'd say a shoal of 5-8 would be about right, assuming you want a few other fish too.
