Green Hair Algae

Well, to be straight forward, I hate green hair algae. It is unattractive, and just a PITA. But, I personally do not know why green hair algae grows, so someone explain it to me. What must someone be doing, that green hair algae is growing. Also, if it is possible, could you get rid of green hair algae permanently, and how? For those of you who share the same hate for green hair algae, and have pulled off a miracle of getting it out of your tank, can you please help a guy out :spin2:

search my name, I did a writeup on the GHA and bryposis. Your system is nutrient rich, that's why it's there in the first place. 1st thing to do. cut back feedings. cut back your light cycle a little. do that for a couple weeks and it should start to fade but will never really go away. to combat the rest of it. I would highly suggest getting a phosphate remover such as a GFO reactor from bulk reef supply or a phosban reactor from two little fishies. There is also a little miracle product by API called algaefix marine. there are two types freshwater and marine. make sure you get the right one. I'm not sure how well it works but it has been getting some pretty good reviews so far, search for it and read up before you start dosing it. Another thing to try is bring your mag up to about 1600 for a little while and that should also do it. but I also heard that you have to use the kent brand mag product to be successfull. not really sure so again read up on it. Also, if you run a fuge get some chaeto in there.

In all honesty there are a million things you can do that worked for other people but may or may not work for your tank. Keep it simple and dont go crazy. keep your nutrients low, dont overfeed and cut your lite cycle by at least an hour. Pull out the GHA as much as possible until the problem corrects itself. its a vicious uphill battle, good luck.
