Green Star Polyp?

My GSP has not been extending out for the past 2 days while my Xenia , mushrooms , and button polpys look fine. Is this sometimes normal do they do this and if not can someone give me any suggestions? The only test kit i own is a normal Saltwater test kit and ammonia reads 0 nitrite 0 nitrates around 30 PH is reading at 8.2. Ohh these are under Normal Output lighting and the have been growing and spreading until yesterday.

sorry to intrude on this, but i have the same problem, and about the same readings, my po4 is at 1.0 and my calcium is 410 ppm , but i have not seen mine pop out for the past 3 weeks, but they are still bumpy, and seem to be staying about the same size. all of the other corals are doing really good, except them... any suggestions?

If your nitrates are 30ppm or higher, that could be the problem. So animals are more sensitive to nitrate then other, but you should be shooting for 20ppm or lower for a softy tank, and 10ppm or less for hard corals. 30ppm is pushing the limits, 50ppm and stuff will start shriveling up and dieing on you.

I think you need to check into the source of these high nitrates. Why don't you start describing your setup, tank load, feeding methods, etc. Thanks! :)

Nitrates are because i dont have enough live rock and I'm currently not using a sump or skimmer ( well im pretty sure thats the cause). The tank only has HoB filters and a bio-wheel i do plan on upgrading very soon but cash is tight righ now so it will have to wait. On a brighter side the water change fixed it brought the nitrates down and GSP is happy and extended out as usual thanks all for your help.

the biowheel is your problem there. You really need to remove it and place it in the tank so that the bacteria will proliferate and spread through the tank. After a few weeks pull it out and toss it.

There are reasons why biowheels are not the best idea on marine systems, they are long winded and somewhat complex, but trust me on this......

Also...........you have to get more live rock if thats whats needed. And by that I mean coral based rock, not limestone.

Trying to keep a marine sytem functioning without a good filter such as LR and good sand is like trying to keep birds without enough air. Its just something that can not be sacrificed without problems ensuing.

Paul.
