green star polyps vs. acans

"Umm fish?"

Let's say, for instance, one might have a bunch of green star polyps taking aim at a bunch of acans. Who will win this battle (i.e, if it were to possibly happen to me, do I need to set up a DMZ around the acans)?

Thanks!

Thanks, that's what I figured. Sigh. I guess I'll get the two part epoxy ready again. Anyone need any GSP frags? :)

Acan Echinata's are one of the meanest, nastiest LPS imo. I've seen them completely encase HUGE mushroom polyps, SPS and other softies in a cocoon-like webbing, overnight.

I don't have GSP vs. Acan experience, but I do have Acan vs. SPS and Acan vs. softie experience. IMO, the acan's would win, hands down.

Mine has started growing right over some bubble algae that my emerald crabs steadfastly refuse to eat. I thought I was going to be stuck with this patch forever (right in front, and the first thing visitors comment on, naturally), but the gsp is heading right up and over it.

Well, I was going to be picking up some GSP from a friend here in Longmont, but if you are already making clippings I would be interested. Do you know what type of GSP it is?

No, I don't know what kind it is. It's not the flourescent green that you see around so often. It has brown on it, and that mixes when you are farther away into more of an emerald green. It actually complements the other flourescent greens in my tank really well, as well as looking more like grass. Here's the (really closeup) picture:

i think the acan will win... but thats just my opinion. i recently caught my acan. maxima physically ingesting a branch of my nepthea in one of its mouths......

I've seen them ingest most things they come in contact with. The GSP would never have a chance to spread onto it. They don't even have to touch for the acan to attack. All they have to do is be near their prey.

Okay, well maybe I'll let the GSP get a little closer before I start yanking them outta there. Thanks. It'll be an experiment.

I do still have some frags of the GSP available, though, if anyone's interested.

gsp sucks. it killed one side of a millepora, some zoas, and a few other random things in my tank. PITA to get rid of too. Anyone have a good solution other than scrubbing it off?

What I've been doing to make a DMZ around corals is to mix up some two-part epoxy and just lay it right where I need to contain the GSP. It kills the GSP under the epoxy. When the GSP climbs up onto the epoxy I just remove it and, voila, an already mounted frag of GSP.

I would assume you could also just cover the entire area where the GSP are and that would kill them off.

Kalk paste works to control it.

So the GSP has grown to about 1/8" from the acan (at full extension) and seems to have stopped. In fact, it may even have receeded a bit.

So maybe that's how you can control GSP: grow acans all around it. :)

The only thing that has taken on one of my acan frags and won has been an encrusting hydnophora, and it was a toss up who was winning that one.

That would make for a great cage match. :eek1: I think the Hydno would prevail. Acans taking a close second. ;)
