Green star polyps

if they aren't starting to open a few hours after lights on tomorrow take a turkey baster and give them brisk but no overly violent shots of water across them for about 5 min. that usually entices them out within a few hours, if not repeat.

in some extreme cases I've had them stay closed for 4-5 days after taking a toothbrush and scrubbing them, but as long as the purple mat is not deteriorating they are fine.

Patience is most definetly a virtue with these... I too have had them closed up for 10- days or so upon setting them initially in a new tank .. Keep us posted

Well the mat still looks purple and ok to me, I can also see a bit of green poking out in a few spots, hopefully all is well

i added a GSP rock about 7 days ago, just this morning they started to open when the actinics were on, then when the other lights came on they closed up, should i still wait or should i try the turkey baster method?

just leave em alone, they'll come out.

This sounds like a better idea than the one you had previous. Scrubbing with a toothbrush? If the water is ok these things will open up on their own. Just give em a chance. They grow like a weed in most cases.

Pat

It's obvious to me that you didn't read my previous reply.

i never suggested scrubbing them with a toothbrush to the poster, i stated I've done so in the past to remove algae from their mat and that makes them take several days to come back out, but blasting then with spurts of water from a turkey baster will entice them back out.

i have a piece about four inches bye four inches and they opend with in 10 mins of adding them to my tank, i cant remember anytime that they have not been open while the lights are on, but i do agree patience patience patience and if you learn nothing else learn patience, you can not rush any part of reefing :)

Put them under strong lighting, low to medium flow. STOP putting your hand in the tank and stop disturbing the rock... They will come out. :D

I got a really nice full rock of green and yellows. They were open 4 hours after
putting them in my 9 gal nano cube. Everything was fine, they were doing great up
till about a week ago. Right before that, I had added some blue legged hermits and
noticed at night one of the hermits keeps going on them. Now it looks like a quarter
of them are gone. Is the hermits munching these?...I didnt know they ate polyps?
Today about 60% of whats left is half out and that same hermit is back up there.

personally I've never had a problem with hermits, they do tick me and a few corals off by constantly climbing over them but all they do is make the polyps close for a few hours when they do. the ones i find consistently sitting in the middle of a coral i pluck out and drop in with the triggers, seams fair play to me.

How much flow is too much for these corals? I added a good sized colony to my tank on Monday. The green came out three hours later after the turkey baster method. Now only about half of the green is out. It seems that the part in more current is more open than the other part. This is probabally a stupid question but do you have to feed these corals?

Sorry for the stupid question,
Mike
