Green tonga just split?

FLricordia

In Memoriam
My green tonga split within a 24hour period. I was wondering why it was all folded over. So this is how they spread? I was expecting to hopefully see it leave behind a part of its foot like the other mushrooms in the tank and grow into a new one.
Anyone have their tongas reproduce like this?

Here it was last week before I moved it down to the sand bed to make room for my new rics. Don't find any locally either. Just happened upon this one couple months ago.
I noticed some of my FL ricordias splitting today and one of my yumas left a part of its foot on a small rock that dropped. Now I can't take my eyes off the tank. Like watching over children.

i have quite a few types of mushrooms. it seems the hairies prefer to split like this rather than grow out the foot and have babies.. thats how i've seen all of ours spread

I maintain a 240 for someonme and her hairy mushrooms grwo like crazy. I have taken scissors to them to keep them from spreading over other corals and chocking them out. Doesn;t do any good. The pieces settle in othe parts of the tank and grow to full size and the foot felt behind regrows. I am afraid to do this with my tongas though.

best way to stop them from growing is put a rock over the growing ones. not cutting.. THEY JUST GROW BACK!!! haha. those crazy mushroom

Flricordia,
I have taken the razor to my tongas and had success. I have also tried cutting a tonga shroom that was attached to a rock and 2 of the three pieces I cut grew back together because I could not separate them.
I have had a rock topple over and upside down that I was unable to upright for a few days , and those mushrooms were never seen again.
Happy reefin' Scott

yes ,cl2ysta1 of your hairies..an i got a purple one that i just trim the edges an it grows a new mouth on the piece i cut..but they woant split..an it still 5 to 6 inches across..

First, not a Tonga, second, it was torn, and did not split by itself.
What? Are you talking about mine? Oh, boy! :rolleye1:

i dont have a picture of them splitting, but i can take a picture of the three it became. i started off with 3 on one dead branching hammer stalk, and now i have 5. so i broke the stalk in pieces to separate them they are purple hairy with green background. i'll get a pic for u later tonite
