Grind-A-Thon... frozen food making and tank viewing details

Hey everyone, sorry for not posting this sooner I had some doubts that I could get it done this weekend but now it is a sure thing. It is open to anyone on the forums or in the club that wants to join in the fun.

This Saturday, July 19th you are all invited to my house to make some DIY frozen food and check out my system. I thought we could get together starting around 4:00 and check out the tanks and equipment. Then hang out and B.S. inside or outside depending on the weather. I will supply some hot dogs and chips for a little grillin'

Then we can move on to the Critter Grindin' Fun. We can have all the bags labeled and laid out in my fishy freezer and when you are ready to head out just grab yours and go.

Please bring your favorite beverage so I don't have to try to get every type to please every person. Alcohol is welcome but I have 3 children and don't want it to get out of control. Just a word of caution... PLEASE try to refrain from foul language. I know most of you are pretty good about it at meetings but in an informal situation maybe it will get more relaxed and the "F bombs" may start dropping. I am hoping my kids don't learn any new words :) (like they don't hear it at school anyway)

I have decided that it would be hard to coordinate every person bringing something to add to the food and if one important ingredient didn't show we would all be out of luck. the solution is that I will buy all the supplies and depending on how many people show up we can just split the costs accordingly.

If we get 10 people and make 40 bags we can each leave with 4. If there are only a few people that show we can split it up differently.
I don't mind having 10 bags in the freezer if that's how it ends up.

If you already have purchased stuff for this purpose feel free to bring it and we can just make MORE and MORE :D

I will have a few lbs of assorted squid, oysters, octopus, shrimp, scallops, fish filets etc...
I bought golden pearls of all sizes, spirulina powder, nori, Naturose, formula frozen brine shrimp, krill, cyclopeeze, prawn roe and mysis and some Formula Two frozen to add to the mix.

If anyone has a fairly new and almost full bottle of Selcon, (fresh or DT's) phytoplankton or DT's oyster eggs or garlic extract that they could bring please let me know or I will run out for those items myself Friday after work. We would obviously calculate the cost of your supplies out of the final food cost for you.

If you would like something not listed here in your mix feel free to bring it. We can throw it in and blend it up afterward. I prefer not to add vegetables to the food for my tanks but some people like broccoli or other veggies. I just use the seaweed and spirulina for veggies.

I am unsure how many people can make it but I originally had a count of around 15-16 people that said they would come.

My address is 1240 Laurel Drive, West Salem, OH 44287.

Here is a link to Google maps of this address. If you just right-click the map and then click "directions to here" it will give you detailed directions. I am 20 minutes south of Wellington, 30 minutes west of Akron, 30 minutes southwest of Medina, 55 mins south of Vermilion, 50 mins from Cleveland, 30 minutes north of Mansfield, 45 south of Amherst and North Royalton. Jeff and Tom you are like 1.5 hr away out there in eastern PA or Chardon :D

I would appreciate if you could post a simple comment in this thread if you will be here so I can get a rough count of how much people food to buy. If you have any portable beach chairs or something you may want to have it in your car in case we need more seating.

Hey Kevin, you can count me in (possibly Laura too) since I was planning on swinging out your way to check out that ATO unit.

I was planning on making up a mix using the DIY recipe on Melev's site, but haven't gotten around to it yet. So I have some frozen foods I could bring if you would like.

Hikari Daphnia
Hikari Bloodworms
Hikari Mysis Shrimp
San Fransisco Bay Krill
San Fransisco Bay Plankton

I also have a full smaller container of Spectrum Marine Pellets, and almost a full bottle of Kent Garlic Extreme.

Just let me know if you would like me to bring any/all of it, or which you would prefer. It's not a problem, because like I said I was planning on making up a mix anyway.

This is great! I really wish I could join the fun, but professional obligations are going to keep me busy. There's a big food and wine event at a place called the Culinary Vegetable Institute in Huron. Enjoy the hot dogs!

Kevin count me in! I can pick up the DT phytoplankton, what size will we need. I need to pick some up for myself, so let me know if you want me to get some.

And what is Selcon?

Earl

Kevin,
I be there. I bought a can of FD cyclop-eeze and Vita-chem marine formula when I wanted to make my own. I'll bring them along with 4-5 partially use frozen cube packages. Let me know what else I can bring.
Thanks,
Phil

I don't know Kevin, I was planning to come until I heard the no F-Bomb rule....

However, I might be able to clean my trap for an evening.

Jeff, I was hoping you would not be stuck in your big mud puddle and be able to make it out here. It sounds like a good time so far.

If you guys want to bring something food related we could use some sort of deserts like cookies, brownies, cupcakes etc... Store-bought is fine or just bring yourselves :)

I placed the order for the golden pearls, spirulina and Naturose a few days ago and still haven't gotten them. They are coming from MA and through UPS so I hope they make it tomorrow or we are in trouble because UPS does not do Sat. delivery unless you pay extra. :(

fambrough, your event sounds MUCH snootier than ours. Our food will probably smell worse too. (unless you are having some of those "Gym Sock" cheeses there)

blueeagle, If you are planning to get some DT's anyway then that sounds great. If you would normally buy the little bottle then just get the next size up and you can take the remainder home and probably save a few bucks. If you are going for the medium one then just grab the big bottle and we can do the same.

I have been using the ReefNutrition PhytoFeast instead of DT's lately but the stuff I have is past its date and is getting stinky. I don't want to risk polluting everyone's food to save a few dollars.

The Selcon is just a vitamin additive that I added last time and never bought more. I don't know if it does anything but it's like $12 and will do enough for probably 5 batches of food.

If anyone needs to reach me about something the best way is here through RC. Try PMing me first. If that doesn't work you can leave a voicemail at 419-496-1104 and I will get it as soon as I get the message but I get terrible reception inside the house.

I usually grab the 15oz. So I will bring the 30oz bottle, will that be enough? How much will we need? I don't want to end up with 25 oz.

I kind of just use it as the thinner to reduce the consistency until it is just right. If you have too much I would be willing to buy it off you and I'm sure there is a container around here I could use.

Originally I was going to go, but other plans made by wife and parents left me unable to attend. I am however willing to pay for the share of the frozen food as another person, provided someone can take it home and I pick it up from them that is close to the Akron area (hint hint Tswifty :) ). Sounds like a lot of fun though and would definitely rather be there than where I am going.

OK today is the day :D

Looks like we went from 16 interested people down to 8. I think we will have lots of left over food. See you guys around 4.

Be sure to have my name and the address with you so you know where you are going when they ask you at the guard gate.

The subdivision is called Cinnamon Lake.

Gotta go clean the tanks so I'm not embarrassed. LOL

Kevin I got called into work today so I am iffy on making it. I am going to try and make it if it we don't run to late, Sorry. Count me in with divying up the food to spread out the costs and I will hook up with you during the week. Again sorry.

John, we should be around for a few hours so as long as you can make it we won't flog you for being late. I'm guessing 8:00-9:00 before things are winding down totally.

There have been a couple questions about what to bring. I didn't plan on adding bloodworms but anything other than bloodworms or silversides ... and it is frozen bring it along. I don't use the cylcopeeze flakes but I have about 3/4 of a bar of frozen cyclopeeze here and that should be plenty. If T.J. brings Selcon and blueeagle brings phyto we should be good to go :)

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped to make the food today.
itZme cool set up man, never seen the dual corner set up before. You will have to posts some pics when that skimmer breaks in.
Thanks again for a everything.

Thank you guys for coming out and making it a great night. I had a lot of fun. Thanks for the compliments on the setup.

It turned out just about perfect with splitting up the food.

After it cleared out in here I got the skimmer going a bit and it started to get a nice foam head on it. Check out the break in pics. Not bad for only running it a few hours total so far. Hope it skims some gunk outta this tank :)
