Treatment vs. Quarantine. when to do which process.

Treatment vs. Quarantine. when to do which process.

TREATMENT is a process where you actively remove the parasites from the fish. Hobbyist usually do copper, TTM, Pazi, and combination of few meds (I recommend TTM/PRAZI and not copper). Treatment tanks usually don't have a biological filtration system established in it.

QUARANTINE is a process done immediately after the treatment process is complete to make sure/find out whether your treatment was successful or not. Quarantine process could be simply holding the fish in a tank for 21 days and monitoring the fish's skin and behavior. A well lit system will be helpful for visual observation of the fish. It is better to have the biological filtration system established in a quarantine system since the fish will be held here for a while.

Although we use the word's "Quarantine" and "Treatment" interchangeably for getting rid off parasites, they are very different processes with very different meanings trying to achieve very different things.

At the minimum, hobbyist MUST Quarantine the fish before taking it anywhere near their Display Tank.

If your fish is from a trusted source like Diver's Den, then I recommend Quarantining them (Treatment may not be needed, and fish going through treatment twice may not make it or it may be too stressful for them, etc). The assumption here is that the fish was already treated, and it is most likely to pass the quarantine process. In this case, If the fish passes quarantine, then it goes to display tank but if it fails, then goes to treatment tank.

If your fish is not from a trusted source, then you better do the Treatment Process first followed by the Quarantine process before you take the fish anywhere near your display tank. Skipping the treatment process in this situation, i.e., Quarantine process without treatment process will most likely ruin your Quarantine tank with parasites, and in addition to that, your fish may not come out clean without parasites at the end of the quarantine period.
Just my 2 cents.

letting parasites in your own tank?

letting parasites in your own tank?

Finally, If you let the parasites inside your own Display Tank, then who is to be blamed?
the LFS? or wherever you bought the fish from? OR the ocean where the fish and the parasites came from? No! I don't think so.
You are to be blamed. You let it enter in your own Display tank, and now you will be dealing with it dearly which can be a huge emotional drain on you, and a number of ppl had gotten out of the hobby because of it.
Make your decisions wisely!
An ounce of prevention is better than gallons of cure. :deadhorse:
