Grouper

Will a Blue dot grouper (Cephalopholis argus) get to big for a 210 gallon tank? The rest of the tank mates will be Zera eel Golden tail eel, Bursa trigger and a Hawaiian black trigger.

It's borderline. It can get 24" according to http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/speciesSummary.php?genusname=Cephalopholis&speciesname=Argus

If it were a triggerfish of that size, I would definitely say no. Triggers are too active. Groupers are much less so, so it's tempting in this case. Butttttt, that's still a BIG fish.

If it were me, I wouldn't do it. I'd opt for a 240g or even better a 300g if I was really hot for that fish. Or get a slightly smaller but similar grouper. How about these?:

Blueline (14 inches) http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/spe...6&genusname=Cephalopholis&speciesname=formosa

Coney (16 inches):http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/speciesSummary.php?ID=8816&genusname=Cephalopholis&speciesname=fulva

Or one of these cool soapfish. I've kept both and really liked them:

Spotted (14 inches) http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/Summar...27&genusname=Pogonoperca&speciesname=punctata

Golden stripe/ six line (10 inches): http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/Summar...&genusname=Grammistes&speciesname=sexlineatus

what about the Red flag grouper (Cephalopholis urodeta) they get about 11"

11" grouper is fine in a tank that size. Nice looking fish! Geez, I never knew they stayed that small. I thought they got a lot bigger. You just taught me something! Thanks! :)

Blue Line Groupers are gorgegous! I have a 3" baby, that I'm raising.

They sure are beautiful, I've had a couple of them... unfortunately they tend to get very aggressive as they get larger.

Im going to be setting up a 125 soon and was wanting to get a grouper for it. I have looked at the miniatas grouper and think that it would work good in this tank, but am not sure. I also really like the Polleni groupers. I am really thinking about getting one of theses.

I'm not too familiar with the Polleni (and am too lazy at the moment to look it up) but I'd advise against a miniatus if you want to keep it forever. That's a big boy -- about 18" and fairly ornery. Get a smaller species. The aforementioned red-flag is red also and smaller. A better fit for you.

i found a page that says blue dots only get 16"
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=138

I've heard good things about this company in terms of ordering and shipping healthy fish and inverts, but their measurements and minimum tank sizes are often very inaccurate.

For instance, look up "naso tang". They say you can keep an adult in a 125g. Ridiculous. "Snowflake moray eel" gets 2 feet???? They need to speak to my old snowflake, who was 6 inches longer than that when he died of old age. "Tessalata eel" they say grows to 5'10", yet can be kept in a 180g???? :rolleye1: There are a lot more examples.

Use www.fishbase.org they are the most accurate.

I've had my Blue dot grouper (Cephalopholis argus) for about 16+ years and it's only about 12" or so. They don't get as large as some of the other groupers. Usually Blue dot/spot groupers stay in the range of a little bit over a 1'.
