Grouping Flame Angels

Pretty cool. I have to admit when I first read the title of the thread I was like "oh this will end badly.." but after seeing the video you would think they've been best buds for years. Also good to see your yellow didn't bother them at all, I've read they can get aggressive to new smaller additions... It would be sweet if they eventually school around. Oh and that music is perfect for the spunk you have in there, my fish swim around in slow mo- I guess if I had two MPs it would help with that... Thanks for sharing!

So it has been just over 1 month with the trio.

I swear that the submale is turning into a female, or at least his anal fin is adopting a more rounded profile.

Give him/her a bit more time and I will try and snap some new photos.

Time will tell.

Anyways, they are all getting along pretty well. Fins are intact, there is some chasing and posturing but I think that is to be expected. Everyone is eating well, and healthy.

i love the idea of pairs an trios in an aquarium. i tried to pair 2 potters angels a little while back. the tank was a standard 120 4x2. they never really paired just kinda tolerated each other. i had them for 2 years before i lost them in a tank transfer.

any more updates on the angel trio would be nuts if this turned into a flame angel breeding forum which alot of eyes would definately be on you lol.

Glad I read this thread! On 11/5 I added three flame angels and three multicolor angels with hopes of them forming small harems. Their size ranges from 1" to 1 1/4". They all seem to get along great with only a little chase here and there the resident male lyretail anthias gave them a rough time for the first few minutes of lights on but that was short lived.

I would love to hear how yours are doing!

Hey guys,

Sure, an update. Everyone is getting a long very well. The original male still chases the other two every now and again, but nothing serious. No one shows any damage.

In terms of breeding they definitely do the dance at dusk. I would have no idea how to collect the eggs or raise them, I think though flames have already bred in captivity. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think the convention that there should only be one dwarf per tank is ripe to be challenged. The more people that post success stories with multiple angels the better.

I currently have a 2x flame and shepardi trio. Used to be 3 flames but the smallest one got bullied to death.
Once this happened, all 3 lives in relative harmony with the flame pair dancing nightly while the shepardi gets ignored.

I had my flame male with female potters and a multicolor I assume was a female. I've had a stack of other pairs.

I really don't think singles of these fish are the best way to keep them. They like the loose, semi interactive groups.

Interesting that you have a Potters with a Flame, I would like to keep multiples of these guys as well. It would happen in a 10' long 300 Gallon tank.

I pair and harem flames and other dwarfs all the time. Its pretty simple when you get the hang out it (and have many to choose from). this is where most people go wrong, they have limited access to pick which ones will work.

IMO, using one big flame (male) and 2 the same size smaller, wont work. The sizes have to be different (1 small, 1 md, 1 lrg/male) The md has to be female or you will have 2 eventually. Males will be elongated with extended anal fins (almost like streamers), females will be more rounded. (this is for flames)
