I heard somewhere that sea lettuce can be grown as a free floater and doesn't have to be attached to a rock. Is this true? Living here in Japan we have loads of sea lettuce growing and I was thinking of collecting some for my fuge. Also, anything special I should know about growing it?

Are you referring to Ulva? If you search RC you should be able to find info from people who have attempted to culture this algae. I believe this algae grows well unattached but there are several different species and some seem to be easier to aquaculture than others. I had no luck with whatever kind of Ulva I found in coastal Maine, USA.

I started with a piece of ulva about the size of a softball, and it is freefloating in the corner. Now, it is about the size of 4 softballs (when i crumple it up into ball). I notice it grows FAST. So the answer to your question, you can freefloat it. If you have good water quality and good lighting, it will get real big real fast!
I also grow ulva and have found that it seems to do best at a lower temperature than a reef tank. I have a small tank that sits on my window sill (no heater - just a small power head for water movement). I feed the tank Macro Algae Grow (from http://www.florida-aqua-farms.com/ ) every week or so. I just harvest and drop into my reef tank.

What is the temp of your tank that you are growing ulva? I went out and collected some this past weekend so I am curious if it will survive. I currently keep my reef tank at about 77 F. I did notice that ulva around here grows best in the winter so I hope mine will do alright at my tank temp. If not, I'll pull it out and make soup.
