Growing Xenia

Seems like I've read somewhere it will on average, Quadruple in a months time under good conditions.

I'd say that's spot on as I've just watched a Xenia frag go from one to four plus heads in a Nano I set up in about a month.

That was all from one rock with about 10 stalks on it that was introduced back around the first of the year. I leaned that rock all across the back wall to get that spread out. I don't really want it anywhere else as it grows really fast. I am continually pulling rocks out to strip them of all growth

It is a pest. I had less trouble with aptaisia:rolleyes:

Yup...I got one stalk in late April and I now have 10+. I had it growing up the glass and it has covered adjacent rocks.

I have given away at least 5 stalks.

it grows like CRAZZZYYYYY! i flush about 10-20 stalks every month. it gets really annoying having it cover other corals! i will be slowly taking it ALL out of my tank.

Now I just received a few frags of xenia. Any advice or suggestions on how to get them to attach to a rock? As of now they are in my tank in a glad container.

get a plug and put the Xenia on it and then use a piece of tulle and rubber band it loosely around the frag. In about a week, the Xenia will grow onto the plug and you can take off the netting.

Since I started this post I picked up a couple stalks and within a week I can see that they are starting to split. They must really like my 400 MH's

thanks for the info singold, mine is growing like wild fire but I didnt realize the direction of the flow mattered. Its almost like it flows my flow perfectly.

They grow in the direction of the flow in the tank.

IME, Xenia grows more upward than with the flow, but that might be because I have less flow. But that makes it easy to contain them....

its really odd, some ppl have no trouble keeping it and others cant keep it! i see that post all over the web site :)

if it is a spot it likes it will grow like a weed. unfavorable spots will grow slow or not at all and may just melt

What's even weirder is that some people have been growing Xenia for years.. only to see them melt in less than 24 hours for no apparent reason. I had this happen to me too- everything tested out fine, no water changes, no additives.. it just kicked the bucket for no apparent reason.. To be honest I think Xenia has got to be the weirdest coral in this hobby in my opinion.

It has been suggested numerous times that they favor nutrient-rich waters.
