Growing Xenia

yea xenias a weed. i dont know why youd flush frags of it downt the toilet? thats kinda a waste in my opinion >.<. if it does start to grow like crazy why fdont jou just give chunks of it to your lfs? better than killing it

They grow very fast!! and they attach almost to anything adjacent!!! I got one stalk of pom pom xenia like a month ago and now i have like 5 more stalks!! I attach my xenias with rubber band to a piece of rubble.

To be honest I think Xenia has got to be the weirdest coral in this hobby in my opinion.

Yup.

I bought a golf-ball sized frag of it a while back (maybe 8-10 polyps).

Dwindled to 1 or 2 polyps.

Then disappeared.

A month later, 3-4 individual polyps showed up here and there in the tank. One of them in a snail shell from an astrea that just died a few days before (hermit lunch?).

All of the individual heads died but one (not the one in the snail shell).

Now it's back to golf-ball size.

We'll see what happens down the road. My softies seem to have a hard time growing, partly b/c my nitrates and phosphates are not detectable.

I can honestly say that the xenia frag I bought for $30 has yeilded over $800 when selling frags back to the LFS. My clowns host with it too.

See it on the bottom left here:

This is maybe four or five months later:

250W Pheonix's. Suprisingly that birdsnest grows just as fast.

I wish I had a mini weed eater that works under water. Stupid xenia is taking over half my tank. I tried selling, trading and I even have a hard time giving it away. I have those starfish and they dont touch it, but I wish they did.

what kind of skimmer are you running? I am thinking that I am over skimming, hence I have no growth on my xenia.

I cant remember what brand it is. Xenia seems to respond really well to lugols solution though. You may be right though, I don't skim on the heavy side. I heard xenia likes dirty water but im a water changing sob. Try the logols and let me know if it works for you.

thanks I will give it a try

this was my 40 before...no skimmer or dosing or rxtor...water change every 4-5 months and salinity 1.030 or above...it was beyond what the plastic hydrometer box could read. I am not even sure why I had a sump either, I got no chaeto.....now I can't seem to get any to grow.

Ive had the same problem in the past. Xenia is some weird stuff. It seems to be hit or miss. Either you have more than you actually want or you cant keep it alive. Luckily those who can grow it have alot and are usually willing to give some up for cheap or even free. Ask around and see if you can find some, so that if it dies its no big deal.
