The Petco in Oshkosh no longer matches Petco.com prices. Too bad even though the price matches were higher than F&S normal prices. Left all three items on the counter and hit the road!

Ya know, you would think that the big chains would have figured out by now that a little customer service goes a long way. I mean what percentage of people actually would be coming into their store and asking for a price match to online pricing? I would be willing to bet it would be less than 5%.
So you make a sale (and they are still making a profit) by matching their online price and you keep a customer.
Sounds like good business to me but I must be crazy to think such things according to some stores "policies".

I'll get off my soap box now......thank you for listening!

Fixed markup and gross profit margin rates suck. They stand in the way of good customer service and lead to less repeat business.

Just think of all the reefers who read that and other threads stating that that was the place to go... and ANY additional products they pickedup while there.

Scott, I applaud you for standing up for yourself... and showing your integrity and letting them know you to vote with you dollars.

P.S. Stay at home dad...? Really? Me TO!

$35.00 for a 100 watt heater is a bit excessive when the same one can be purchased through F&S for $18.00. Eighteen buck pays for alot of shipping! Nearly 100% markup seems a bit excessive as I'm sure Petco has similar buying power with such standard items that can be distributed across many stores. Brick and mortar store contribute to the markup but.... F&S is probably making between 15-50% markup on the very same item while providing top notch customer service to boot.

Oh well, didn't need the digital thermometer, my spare heater only has an occasional 3-4 degree overshoot, and my poor hydrometer bit the dust in a tragic fall(I can almost taste the correct SG).

Yes Jason, been doing the stay at home thing now for almost a year. The pay sucks but the fringe benefits are great as opposed to my job of 13 years where the pay was good and the benefits kept getting worse and worse.

I don't mind paying more of a mark up if you can get either excellent service, knowledgeable staff, or better yet BOTH! But to pay a high price, get poor service and staff that only knows what time their break is, is out of the question for me.
Needless to say I never go into Petco type stores unless I have no choice.

Having managed a Petco for a good year and a half...this just really makes me sad. One of the prime focuses for people when I was there was knowledge, and I'm proud to say that pretty much all the people we had working there could have answered just about any question you might have had, and were not the type to just sell living creatures without finding out if they were going to a good home. Of course, when I go back in there, things have changed a lot from that perspective, so it doesn't surprise me that the Oshkosh store has gone downhill as well.

I'll have to scope it out and see who the management is there. One of the assistants at the time was a big force in getting us to change our fish supplier, since the one we had before was about the worst I've seen.

Petsmart in Appleton matches any online price I think.
I know they match Fosters and Smith. Problem is they don't have alot of saltwater stuff.
You almost have to go there or call and see what brands they have such as heaters and then find a price for that. They don't usually have the same brands at the store as the petsmart online.

Yes Kass, I prefer Petsmart to Petco (location, location, location) and Pet Supplies Plus to Petsmart (no saltwater fishes).

Petco is TERRIBLE!

I posted something along the same line as this poster awhile back.

First of all their prices, both in-store and online are MUCH higher than Petsmart's.

Petco in Appleton would NOT match their website prices in the store - I was dumbfounded...

I too, left my products sitting on the counter and left Petco after the store manager was very rude and informed me of that fact.

I went over to Petsmart, who DOES match their own website prices at their store, and Petsmart matched Petco's website price - so Petsmart matched Petco's website price when Petco wouldn't!

Can someone say idiot for a CEO?

I always remember this scenario from my Marketing classes in college - would you rather make a little less money or NO money?!

:eek2:
