With my mom's canning abilities to manipulate my dad, he finally bought me, i mean her, an ORA $65 for half an inch Red Planet Acropora!!!!! I know that the red planet acropora is an acropora, but what is the species? What kind of acropora?!I know I have kept you all waiting long enough, so here is the picture! Oh, and don't mind the hair algae! My hero, Scarlet, my chubby she lawnmower blenny, ate it all in the time that i went to use the restroom and come back! I ought to pay her with some more hair algae feast. Some might say puting hair algae in a tank is ludicrous, but i trust she can maintain it! Here is the photo! :eek1:

$65 is a tad high for the small frag. But either way nice pickup. Red planet is one of favorite acros by far.

well you didnt let me guess you went out and blurted the answer in your first post but as im nice its a Hyacinthus

Thought ORA plugs always came in black? Nice frag but quite expensive. Luckily on your dad's dime. ;) Good luck.

I've seen like 3-4 threads recently of people documenting their red planet frag growth recently. The popularity of this coral never dwindles...

Black or white plugs but always plastic and the same design as the black ones we all know. The plug in the pic the OP posted is not a ORA plug.

The store that I bought if from, is actually charging 30% more for everything. He got this frag along with ten or so others from a good friend of his. So they weren't strait from ORA but he gave the friend about $200 for the frags. I figure, in a year or so, that i can frag those specimens and sell them to him and he would sell them for $50 or so so i could get 50% of what he sells it for. Either way, i will gain money that is well needed, plus i will have two beautiful ORA colonies to treasure.

Just my 2c, if you are paying ORA prices then make sure you are getting ORA product in the future. All ORA pieces should come on plugs this shape:
http://www.orafarm.com/products/drygoods/coralplug.html

Most will be black, except MIMF stuff which comes on purple plugs of the same shape. $65 is a little high for a fully encrusted larger piece direct from ORA, and definitely high for a "chopped up for additional profit" or fragged out piece of supposedly ORA coral.

That being said, the piece looks healthy and authentic, and good luck growing it out!!

Either way, it's great that you have something new that your excited about! The Red Planet is a really cool acro.

But speaking of overpriced LFS's... I went in recently to mine, saw a frag of Palmer's Millepora. The price: $200. Yeah... awesome coral, but not quite worth $200.
